Hi
I went through the links which Mr. Chesterman had posted. Quite interesting and informative. Thank you Mr. Chesterman
I submitted my online application today i.e. on September 19, 2007 along with the personal statement, resume, Singapura Scholarship essays, application fee and other necessary attachments. I've also sent my official transcripts through DHL and they should reach NYU by Friday.
Hopefully will get to know soon from NYU@NUS on the admission and the scholarship. I wonder how long it would take the Committee on Graduate Admissions to respond?
I haven't applied anywhere else as NYU@NUS is my first preference. After going through the LLM Programs of a number of US and UK Universities I decided that the NYU@NUS LLM is unique and suits my future goals/ aspirations the best.
Has anyone else applied so far and received information on their admission/ scholarship?
Indian Lawyer how are you doing? You've been silent for some time. :)
Cheers

Hi everyone! Thank you Mr. Chesterman for the additional information! Just as you prashbez, I have finished my application and send everything. i was just worry and waiting to make sure that my recommendation letters be submitted as soon as possible since the Committee starts reviewing completed application by the end of the month. Well, I got an e-mail from NYU today stating that my application was now complete and would be submitted to the committee soon. I guess at this point all we can do is wait....I'm also waiting for my NY Bar results so it just adds to the pressure!
Indian lawyer must be buried under work, I hope you are doing ok.
Well, I let you know if I hear anything goodluck to all 2007 applicants!

Hi
Good to hear that you have submitted your application too.
My Transcript would reach today in all probability so I guess I would also get a confirmation from NYU soon.
My recommendation was submitted online by my recommender.
You're right, all we can do now is wait and see what happens. :)
All the best to you for your NY Bar exam results and to everyone else who has applied to NYU@NUS.
Hopefully will see you there. :)

Well, I was cruising on the this site and found archives of last year. It seems that admissions decisions were made starting December! I don't know it was just because it was the 1st year of the program or if it is going to be the same this year too. I was disappointed to hear that because I was hoping to have an answer sooner no whether positive or not given that I would like to go there sooner to kinda have time to visit before class starts. Aiso last year admission notification were sent by e-mail while rejection sent by mail...
Well, let's all do like they did last year by keeping each other posted on admission recieved or not....We are all going through the same experience so we may as well make the best of it!

Hi
I hope that decisions are sent well before December. Since I haven't applied anywhere else and most of the other places and scholarships have a December deadline for me, I definitely would like to know the NYU@NUS decision as soon as possible. I don't plan on applying anywhere else till the NYU@NUS decision.
Hopefully they would decide on a "rolling" basis as they have mentioned on the website. Waiting till December will be a long wait. :)
The earlier one gets to know the better. If one gets admission but doesn't get a full scholarship then it would help if one knew earlier as that would give enough time to arrange the extra finance required.
Will keep you informed in case I get any information on admission/ scholarship.
My Transcripts have reached yesterday, I received confirmation on the DHL website. My application is now complete and will be forwarded to the Admissions Committee on Monday I hope.
Cheers

hello all!
I'm in the process of applying to NYU@NUS too. I was not sure whether to do an LLM next year or not as i had some other stuff lined up but i thought i should apply just in case my plans didn't work out.
So i seem to be pretty late seeing as most of you have already sent your applicatons. I'm almost done with my online application and my university is sending the transcripts directly to NYU. Unfortunately i have to send my references by mail as my lecturers are a bit old fashioned and prefer it that way. MY question is, do you think it is a bad idea to have the transcripts and references sent separately? I'm worried it will get lost in the mess of 1000s of applications. I could probably get one referee to make his recommendation online, but i don't want to just send one receommendation alone to NYU.
What do u guys think i should do?
Also, i'm not applying for the Singapura scholarship as i didn't get a first class. Any ideas on what sort of people (academic wise) get that scholarship? Also, for those of you who did apply, how long did it take to do the extra essays? I'm balancing a full time business course with a part time job right now and time is of the essence.
thanks in advance for the advice.
One more question: how long are your personal statements? Mine's bordering on 550 and it's getting tedious to cut it down to the 500 limit. Is it a must to keep under the limit?

Hi Tara
Let me give you my views on your comments and queries:
1. I don't think you're too late to apply. But the faster you send your application the better.
2. I feel that whatever documents have to be sent to NYU, they should be sent together. It would help NYU to receive the documents at the same time and complete your application faster. They would be dealing with so many applications that sending documents separately would only increase their workload. Since your Univ is sending the transcripts directly, you don't have any control over that. My Univ handed me the transcripts in a sealed envelope and I sent them by DHL. The package reached NYU in 2 days.
3. I only sent one recommendation, which my recommender uploaded online. Though I don't know what exactly my recommender has written, but I felt that since he and I had worked together on a lot of major issues facing the company at that time, he was the best judge of my work/ qualities. I didn't send another recommendation as I felt it was not required.
4. My suggestion is to send your recommendations together if you are sending hard copies. Don't send the recommendations separately. However if one of your recommender's can upload it online then that is preferable.
5. Send your stuff by a reputed courier. Use DHL. They are more expensive than other couriers but they are reliable. My package reached in the 2 day timeline which they had promised me.
6. I suggest that you apply for the Singapura Scholarship. I also didn't get a First Class but I've applied as I feel that despite my not getting a First Class in my LL.B, I fulfill the criteria of the kind of candidate they are looking for in regard to the Scholarships. As far as I remember in my batch the highest marks were a 62%. I got a 54.56%. To my knowledge, nobody got the Singapura Scholarship last year. In any case if you don't get the Singapura Scholarship, you would be considered for the other scholarships.
You can check out the link below to get an idea of the kind of scholars:
http://www.nyulawglobal.org/fellowsscholars/HauserGlobalScholars-LL.M.Candidates.htm
7. The main essay for the Singapura Scholarship took me some time to do (say about 2-3 weeks). It took time because I've been working on a major transaction for the past couple of months and have hardly had time to work on anything else. Besides I did a lot of research for my Scholarship essay number one (the one on the current situation/ problem facing your country/ the world) and analysed various Acts/ Bills in detail before finalizing my scholarship essay. The remaining essays took about an hour as I knew what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go. :)
8. My personal statement was 498 words. My scholarship essays number one and two were 490 and 221 words respectively. I suggest you keep it below/ equal to the 500 word limit. It's difficult but if you know what you want, it shouldn't be that tough. I'm sure there's a reason for the 500 word limit otherwise why have it at all? :)
Do let me know if you need any further help from me.
Wish you all the best for your application.
Cheers
Prashant

Hi Tara,
1. I would definetely apply for scholarship because if you do not get the Singapura you may get something else, in either case, writing an essay is not much to do to take a chance; you have nothing to lose.
2. As to the number of words, I was reading the notes posted by others who asked NYU, they were told that while the word limit would not prevent them from reading the rest of your essay, they would prefer that you stay as close as possible to it. My personal essay was 510, my scharship Essays were 474 and 220 respectively. I think they also want to see that you can be brief.
As to the timing, you have time. I would make sure that what you send really reflects your abilities, there is no need to rush to send something that you are not proud of. Few students last year send their applications in late October and got scholarships. I was lucky to write mine after taking the bar and before starting my current position. Remember that you might apply a little bit later but may be more qualified than others so do not underestimate yourself. Even if you have to schedule your time and work on it 2 hours everyday for the next two weeks, the opportunity is just to great to miss.
Guys, I went on the NYU@NUS website and actually listened to the videos and browsed the site. This program really speaks to everything I aim for career wise. I just wished that they had more student interviews or bio so we could have an idea of what the selection looks like. But again since it is the first year, more information will come later.
I was wondering if anyone was also considering studying in Shanghai? I thought the opportunity was great t be able to actually live in two Asian country and experience both legal systems! If I am in that would surely opt in. I reviewed the bio of the students who got scholarships last year (only 2 or 3 bio were posted--I guess only those got scholarship) and only one clearly said she would go to Shanghai.
I hope that they will take in more people this year because they said the program would be a batch of 75-100 students but last year there were only 47. I am hoping that was just for the 1st year and to see test the program before having a full class.
OK, I hope that helped.
Later.

Hi
inguengf
How are things with you? I received confirmation from NYU that my application is complete and would be forwarded to the Committee on Graduate Admissions.
I haven't thought about studying in Shanghai. I think I would prefer to study in Singapore itself.
Hopefully will get to know the decision soon. Thankfully the waiting period won't seem too long as I'm so busy on some big transactions that time is flying and after working 18 hour workdays almost everyday, all I can do is reply to the posts, play my guitars for 15-20 minutes and fall asleep. lol. :)
Tara hope your application is progressing.

Hi prashbez,
Well, it seems that there is a disparity between the notifications. I received the notice that my application was complete and yet my recommendations were not there yet so I replied to the e-mail I got and no response thus far. So I e-mailed the gradinfo admission e-mail and asked them. They actually asked me more info about the notification I got! I am thinking that it was an automatic thing send in error. In any case, I'm hoping for some more news tomorrow.
As to Shanghai, it is an opportunity by way of NUS and East China Univ so that you get to take the remaining classes for your second LLM in China. That is something I will surely explore more if admitted. I was hoping that more people who were applying for this year would post as well.
Well, good luck everyone, even though some of you out there won't need it!

Hi
In my case I don't think it was an automatic email. In fact as I had not received any notification so I had written to the University asking for confirmation. The email came after my email. My recommender had loaded the recommendation online and my transcript was sent through DHL. Delivery was confirmed by DHL.
I'm also surprised that there are not too many posts from people applying this year.
Good luck to you too.
Cheers

I was wondering about the scholarships...i thought i knew this but now i'm having doubts: Do we need to apply for the singapure scholarships with the essays etc in order to be considered for the unnamed 50 schols the uni is offereing each year? I remember indian lawyer saying you were considered for the unnamed schols automatically, but i can't seem to find official word on that on the nyuglobal website.
Also, does anyone have nay idea on what the subjects are in the LLM? I'm curious on what exactly i'll be studying, should i be lucky enought to get in.

Hi Tara
I've applied for the Singapura Scholarship and in case I'm not given that scholarship I'd be considered for the other scholarships automatically. You can check the link below for more info on the Singapura Scholarship.
http://nyulawglobal.org/graduateadmissions/scholarship/hauserglobalscholarsprogram.htm
I'm not sure of the unnamed scholarships but you can check out the link below for more info on some of the other scholarships. From the information contained there it seems that all admitted applicants are automatically considered for those scholarships.
http://www.nyulawglobal.com/graduateadmissions/scholarship/grotiusandvanderbiltscholarships.htm
It doesn't say anything about the unnamed scholarships but it has information about certain other scholarships. I suggest you also write to the University to clarify your doubts.
You can download the course schedule from this link: http://www.nyulawglobal.org/graduateaffairs/llmsing.htm
You should also download the Registration and Degree Requirements PDF file from the link given above. This gives the detailed list of courses for 2007-2008 which were offered for the NYU@NUS Degree on Page 8 of the document. It also provides other relevant information.
Hope this information helps you. Let me know if you need any more help.

just went through the NYU@NUS student guide and i was pleasantly surprised at the range of subjects on offer and some of those instructors are pretty famous! I really didn't expect the courses to be taught by such recognizable names.
Thanks for the clarifications prashbez & indian lawyer. As helpful as always. I wish i could write the essays but i'm kinda in want of time and i also have no idea on what to do the legal problems essay.

Hi
Yes, the range of subjects offered is really good and that was one of the things which made NYU@NUS my first preference.
I think you just need to take out time for the essays. It will be worth it. It's always good to try for a scholarship. Even I was very pressed for time but I managed to take out time for the essays and the research required for my essays.
As for the legal problem essay, you can have a look at my suggestions on another post on this site. Check out this link:

Hi Indian Lawyer,
I was wondering if you had on-campus housing or if not how far you live from campus and if whether it was an issue (traffic wise, safety...). I also wanted to know if you had consider taking on the opportunity to finish you second LLM at the East China University or if you knew anyone in the current program who is anticipating to do so. Thanks.
Everyone else, just as a reminder, this morning was NYU LLM interactive Q&A so if you still have questions and could not attend this morning there is another session tonight please see the attached link, besides for those who cannot attend the transcript wil be posted at a later date (you may also want to review the transcripts from last year).
"In order to accommodate varying time zones, we will hold two sessions. The first session will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (New York/Eastern Time). The second session will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (New York/Eastern Time) Both are on October 2nd (today!)

Cheers

Hi all,
Well, no news so far...what I got from the forum is that is elements of your application refer to events that have not yet occured (i.e bar exam results, graduation...) you will have the opportunity to submit such info for consideration. I am waiting for my NY bar results and during the Admission forum was told that I may submit a copy of the said results, which I will only obtain in a month. Additionally, there were questions about recommendation letters and it was suggested that you may send in more than the number required (at least through mail) and I would guess that they must be either from well known professors or from the specific area you are applying for. In any case, the waiting period has just begun!
I can see that the posting has slown down since the application process began. I hope ppl will keep posting as this is also an opportunity to know each other as we may well be in the same class next year. On this note, I'll get back to work.
