Ozman. It can never be the case where it can be said that one application is better than the other. It depends on what the particular law school requires.I know people who were rejected by lower ranked schools but accepted in places like Harvard and NYU.So dont compare one application to another.that is never a measure and I do feel u have a good chance at NYU@NUS.So pursue it.good luck.

ozman, sorry i didn't see your query here. i did reply in the other forum. it's not that they will not allow nyu@nus graduates in particular to take a harvard LLM, but i think they will not allow persons who already have TWO LLMs to take a harvard LLM. i know persons who have oxford BCLs or peking uni LLMs who have taken harvard LLMs after their first LLMish degree.

Hello Indian Lawyer! I have been reading your posts and they are really helpful.
I am interested to apply for 2008 NYU@NUS program and I will follow your suggestion to monitor closely the website as the announcements will come out in September.
May I just ask if there is anyone from the Philippines in the pioneer batch (your batch)?
Thank you very much.

There are four Filipinos in the first batch. All have some working experience before.

Thanks rainman! Now I am wondering if I know even one of them. ;) I am really interested in applying for next year's program and I am hoping I could ask a fellow Filipino about his/her views about the program.

Hi
I've been reading the posts on this site and especially those of Indian Lawyer and they really are very helpful. Thanks Indian Lawyer. I'll be sure to ask you about the placements at NYu@NUS after October.
I'm from Delhi, India and I'm applying for the NYU@NUS Program for study in 2008. I did my LLB from Delhi, University in 1997 and since then have worked with big law firms in India (Crawford Bayley & Gagrat & Co) and also been Manager Legal for a couple of MNC's (Star News and Max New York Life). Now I'm running my own law firm but want to study further. In total I have about 10 years of experience both in litigation and corporate law/ transactions.
I wrote to the college and asked them when to apply. They replied back saying that the applications would open in early September. Apparantly the earlier one applies the more chances of a scholarship and admission. Iam applying for the Singapure Scholarship, working on my essays right now. :)
I've also obtained a waiver on my TOEFL by email as I've studied all throughout in English.
Though my grades are not that good (I got a 55% in my LLB), but I hope that my work experience will compensate for my grades. Any suggestions Indian Lawyer?
I believe that living costs are about 7000 US$ a year in Singapore. is this correct? Or should I budget for more?
Indian Lawyer what subjects have you opted for?
Cheers
Prashant

Hi prashant.I am glad that my posts were useful to you.
I think when u write ur SOP you should concentrate and highlight ur experience more and thereby reason out why u wanna do an LLM from NYU.
I would say that u should budget ur living expenses at around 10000 USD.Im doing the concentration in US and Asian Business laws.So most of them are corp law subjects for NYU as well as NUS LLMs.
I think you stand a good form of scholarship.Good luck.
Crawford Bayley has a Singapore office as well right?
Cheers.

Hi Indian Lawyer
Thanks for your reply and suggestions.
Crawford Bayley doesn't have any offices outside of Mumbai. At least they didn't while I was working there. They mostly station teams in the particular city where the transaction is being done.
I'll follow your suggestions for the SOP. Of course since a CV also has to be attached with the application, I'll probably concentrate more on why I want to do the LLM and how it will benefit me in the future than on my work ex.
I'm also planning to concentrate on the corporate law subjects. In fact have already selected the subjects from those available for 2007. Unless new subjects are offered for the 2008 session, will go with the choices I've made.
Will keep in touch with you.
Cheers
Prashant

Hi everyone!
I have been following the great information given by Indianlawyer and I have some question. I wanted to know if there were any African in the program, at least to your knowledge. If you could also tell me what my chances are to get in...at least give me your opinion. I am from Cameroon and did my JD in the US. I earned several distinction in international moot court competitions in the US and Swtizerland. I graduated last year, interned with the UN as a trade adviser, and took the NY bar this past summer (will get results in November). In terms of extra curriculars, aside from moot courts I was president of the international law society at my school. I also worked as a research fellow this past year. While my overall GPA was 3.3/4.0, my last semester average was a 92%.
I am considering the MILE program in Switzerland but my supervising attorney recommended that I do NYU@NUS instead.
Getting a scholarship is my main concern, aside from being accepted; otherwise I will have to take a loan for the first time.
So if anyone has any insight, please do share. THANKS!

Hey.now thats a really impressive profile.I not only think you would get in but get in with a scholarship.
There is a student from Rwanda who did his undergraduate studies in South Africa,One from Kenya who did her JD from NYU and came straight over here.Nigeria is also represented.
I think you should definitely apply and your chances (for an admission and scholarship)according to me are bright.
Cheers

Hey Ozman.Sop should be viewed as a tool to represent yourself in front of the admissions committee.it should speak a lot but it should be very brief.Dont rattle on things which are evident in your resu,e.Let them be qualitative answering questions like why you want to do this program, whats unique about you, what have u done in the past which would make u a suitable candidate for this program. What you wish to specialise in here. Why? I hope you get the idea.Be smart and be brief.

Hello Indian Lawyer,
I am absolutely intrigued by the level of information which you have. I am very proud of you and it inevitably appears that you will go really far with continued hard work which I am sure you will do.
I am a UK LLB student from Jamaica. I am currently averaging a 2:1 degree at 62% average which could also be transulated to a "B" average. I have have previous work experience for the summer of last year where I worked as a legal secretary in a local law firm. I have also secured two consecutive internships as a mini-barrister which involved me shadowing Barristers and Judges for two weeks in total. This also involved proof reading and highlighting defence arguments.
I have also been involved in Mooting at a university level and will be entering national competitions this year. I have also worked in retail for the past 4 years part-time whilst studying. Additionally, I have recently bee awarded a scholarship for academic consistence and financial need from my university through one of the UK's top law firms. My grades fluctuates according to subjects. It apppears that I do much better in courseworks in comparison to exams.
Sorry for the long message but I am I still in law school at the moent and will be completing May of next year. What do you think of my chances of getting in? Although you previously stated that each application is decided on it own merit and that it depends on the pool.
Have you come across any students from Jamaica or the Caribbean? Furthermore, what do you think are the jobs prospects in the US in the corporate area if I choose not to live in Asia? Please let me know when you have your law job fair in November about the latter question.
Again, I am in huge admiration of your profile and advice that you have given and would humbly and kindly appreciate your response. One more think, I have never done any sugjects so far relating to corporate law or commercial law. However I will doing Financial Services law starting in October (our new and final academic year). Did you have heavy concentration in the commercial aspects before you embarked on the NYS@NUS course?

Hi tellbuk.Thank you for the kind words.Carribean...reminds me of cricket immidiately when I hear that.:-)
There are no students from Jamaica in the current batch (i might be wrong though) as far as I know. There are just 42 students in this anaugaral batch. We were told that they want to preserve their quality with a small batch of students.I think you have a very decent track record.I would encourage you to apply. However the way things are progressing here with jobs I think we are looked at by international firms in the Asian region.Like you said we are all anxious to find out what happens in Oct-Nov with the job fair.Apart from that there are many students who want to return to their countries.
I have a corp law background but it is absolutely not necessary to have a background.A background definitely helps as it makes things easy for you when you sit in the classes.Since with the NYU LLM we do corporate law in a totally new jurisdiction, there are many new concepts which we learn. Moreover the statelaw varies from state to state in the US and it was very interesting to me.So id say it helps to have a background but its not like you should be worried about how you would perform.Interest is all that is needed.
So concentrate and give your application and essays a lot of time, that is the key.Good luck.
Cheers
