I need help..could any1 plz let me know what are the average costs of the LLM programme NYU@NUS? Also most important if der are placement opportunities in the US or Singapore......Is it worth its value?

average cost of NYU@NUS program (including living expenses) is $52.000. It is certainly worth paying that money, although most of students of first five intakes will receive considerable financial aid covering mainly tuition costs. For instance majority of students of inaugural class received 35.000 each. NYU@NUS graduates will get two separate degrees from NYU law school and from NUS law faculty. Guys, as a student of NYU@NUS program I strongly recommend applying for it.

Hi Sushant...I am a part of inaugaral batch of the NYU@NUS program.It has been almost 2 monts now since the course started and it has been truly amazing.
The professors have been really good and it is truly a very good experience.About placements, we have a very strong career services unit at NYU and you can be rest assured that you would find yourself a job in Asia.We are having our job fair for the NYU@NUS program sometime in October and I would be able to give you a better picture about the placements then.Hope this helps.

Hi...If you are talking about the actual NYU at Newyork Program...then you should probably post the query in the NYU form which you can find under "U.S".
This program is the NYU@ NUS double LLM program in Singapore where at the end of 10 months one walks away with 2 LLMs.This is the inaugaral year of this program and we can expect the job opportunities to be very good considering the unique nature of the program.

This is a very unique program and truly a global program as iot brings two top universities together and u get the double masters in the same time as you get ur single masters...which is 10 months.I am having a great time till now in the program.Great campus,great professors,great staff and very friendly batchmates.

I just came across the NYU@NUS LLM a few days ago and i find it very attractive. In the website it says the earlier u apply the better so was just wandering when the online application process starts. We have to apply straight to NYU, right? I can't seem to find a link to the application anywhere on the website. Does anyone evn have a copy of last year's application so that i can get an idea of what is required (e.g. number of references, any essays etc.)?

Also, if any current students are reasing this- what was the rough average standard of the students admitted? Did everyone have first class LL.B's? High 2 :1 s?

And about the scholarshipe, do we have to apply for the ones mentioned on the website, or do students get them automatically due to the LLM being newly introduced.

There are 42 students in the current batch and they might increase the strength of the batch depending on the strength of the application pool.Most of them have good academis scores and some with very good experience.having said that there are freshers as well.So once cannot pinpoint and say what is important as it basically depends on how strong the application pool is when u apply.Having good scores cannot definitely be a negative.Students are considered automatically for the scholaships except the Singapura scholarship.The Singapura which is a full scholarship requires some essays to be written and you have to indicate on the application that you do want to apply for that scholarship.

The NYU website is filled with information,u might just have to look at the right places I guess.
The first year batch is a mix of Experience , fresh grads, people with 1-2 years if experience.I am a current student and hope this information helps.

Since you are a current student, could you tell me something about the program- as in: do you enjoy it? Is there alot of work with no free time? What's it like living in Singapore- are u in collge accomodation?
And also, i did a UK LLB so i have little knowledge of US or s'pore law- is it difficult to adjust? Or are the subjects based on international law rather than on a specific local jurisdiction?

Sorry for all the questions. Just want to figure out whether NYU@NUS is for me. I got into NUS for undergrad studies, but decided against it, so just want to be sure before i try for graduate school. Thanks again.

No problem...I understand ur anxiety and u can ask as many questions as u want and I will try to answer them.
I will answer ur questions in the same order.
1.I love this course,I and am sure everyone of us here are having a wonderful time.Amazing professors,excellent staff from both NYU and NUS who are always willing to help you.
2.its not all work n no play.Most of us have already done some travelling.The workload is very hectic considering the fact that it is a DOuble LLM program.However it does not consume all the time.We do party and have our fun...:-)
3.I rented out an apartment here and I am sharing it with another person.There is no university accomodation,there are a few university recommended accomodations around campus.Most of us have rented out an apartment and travelling is never a problem as Singapore is very well connected by buses.
4.I like SIngapore,its like home away from home for me as it is a cluster of many cultures and since I am from the South of India,I find this place absolutely fascinating.
5.I did my LLB from India which is also a common law jurisdiction.Singapore is also a common law country.The NYU LLM primarily concentrates on US based law for their teaching but they do not deal with the statues per se but with the policies as such and you must be aware that there is a big influence of Common law in the US
6.There are two specialisations which u can take in the NYU LLM which is HUman rights and Business laws.There is also a general LLM.So there are a wide variety of courses to choose from and yes there are International law courses as well.
7.The NUS LLM has as many as 5-6 specialisations including a general LLM and there is one specialisation in International and Comparitive laws as well.
So what we do here is not about statues but the policies and theories which surround those statutes.So you dont have to worry about being a UK LLB.
I would definitely recommend this program not because of any personal bias but because it is worth it!

Hello again. Another question...
This is more on Singapore law in general rather than the NYU@NUS program.

I was going through the Singapore Law Society pages and discovered that my LLB is not recognised under its Rules so i can;t ever practice in Singapore. Is it still possible to get a (good) law related job in singapore even without being a singapore qualified advocate/solicitor? Will the LLM help?

And is there any (new) news as to whether the NYU@NUS llm is recognised for the purposes of the NYU bar? The website says 'not yet'- any ideas whether this is likely (i figure u might have the inside scoop, since u meet NYU lecturers).

Do you think this programme would be unsuitable for a student who wants to work in the field of international law? I will apply to HLS, Yale, CLS, NYU and some european schools as well, but I have seen that there are many good int law scholars (i.e Simon Chesterman) at the NYU@NSU llm. I am not particularly interested in becoming a business lawyer in Asia - is this still a programme I should go for?

Hi Humber. Indeed!
I would say that there are a substantial number of students here who have a mind set like you. Some of my batchmates are here precisely for International Law and HUman rights.
There are some students who dont have a concentration and do a general LLM .
Like you can see Prof.Chesterman is the Director of this program and he would also be teaching in the semester begining in August as well.He would be teaching "State Building & Administration" and a course on the United Nations.
There are many other professors who are here from NY who teach courses relating to International Law, European Union law,US COnstitutional Law, Law & Political Science,International Human Rights and the like.
What I have stated above are just some of the courses on offer , there are many others as well.
So this program is not just intended for Business lawyers.
When you are doing the NUS LLM ,they have a specific concentration in "International & Comparitive laws".So there are courses on offer there are as well.Not only can you choose a concentration under the NYU LLM, you can do so under the NUS LLM as well. So thats another advantage of this double LLM program.

Yes you are right about being eligible to take the bar exam and practise here.It depends a lot on the LLB degree.However you dont have to worry about that,almost the entire bunch of the LLM students here are from foriegn countries.They have a good chance of finding a job here in Singapore and Asia for that matter. Admission to the bar is never a deterent.Thats with respect to the bar admission in Singapore.They get recruited as legal executives or foriegn legal consultants.
With the NYU LLM, the students have to petition the NY court on an individual basis and those from common law countries will not have a problem at all.Those from the Civil law countries will just have to show that they have the requisites and that their courses are no different from the ones offered in NY.
NYU would also help you in drafting this petition.Thats what we have been told and appearing for the bar in your case should not be a problem as your LLB is from a common law country.Dont worry on that front.

hi Indian lawyer, i have been reading your posts and well you seem to be very welcome, which is of course always welcome. Well i am from Pakistan, i did my LLB from the University of London(External Programme), basically distance learning, recently i have completed my BVC(which is a post graduate diploma) from London, which entitles one to become a member of the England and Wales Bar. I have been following the NYU@NUS programme, and to be honest i really am very interested. However i already have a distance learning degree and well the NYU programme in Singapore, no matter how i think about it does seem to be something similar, what do you think. I am talking from an employer's point of view, there has got to be some difference while studying in NY and in Singapore. Further could you also kindly tell me when to apply for this course, if i want to apply for 2008, and how do you rate my chances as you are a current student, of actually getting into the programme.
