Hi, sorry if this has been done already.
Basically I have been offered the LLM (International Economic Law) at Warwick and the LLM (International Commercial Law) at the Uni of Birmingham for 2010/2011.
I am moving to the West Midlands from abroad for personal reason and these were the only courses I applied for. This would also be my first time in the UK university system.
I like both courses but I would greatly appreciate some feedback or some points to consider as to which one I should pick.
Thank you.
Warwick or Birmingham

Since my student days in the UK about 30 years ago, when there were no rankings, Birmingham has been generally regarded as a very good university. Its law school has also been lately rising to eminence: just look at its impressive staff profiles. Warwick is also good, but my personal choice is definitely Birmingham.

I am a LLB student at the university of Birmingham-and have many friends on their LLM program. That being said, I am extremely biased! I've enjoyed my program very much, and am considering doing an LLM at my programs conclusion next year-Thus I understand your dilemma! I can say for a fact that Birmingham's staff are attentive, and ready to help. I know when I chose where to do my LLB Warwick was one of my choices. Both are extremely good schools, but being an international student (I'm from the USA) I chose Birmingham for the city, as well as its academics. Hope that helps!

Let's compare the best universities in Birmingham and Warwick, and then later, based on the results of the comparison, you can decide which one to choose. Rankings can serve as an indicator of a university’s academic reputation and research impact.
1) Times Higher Education (THE) 2025:
- University of Birmingham: Ranked 93rd
- University of Warwick: Ranked 106th
2) QS World University Rankings 2025:
- University of Birmingham: Ranked 80th
- University of Warwick: Ranked 69th
The rankings highlight each university's strengths, with Birmingham taking a higher position in THE, while Warwick scores slightly better in the QS rankings.
Another factor that reflects a university’s prestige and research power is the number of Nobel laureates associated with it:
- University of Birmingham: 11 Nobel Prize winners
- University of Warwick: 2 Nobel Prize winners
With a significantly higher number of Nobel laureates, Birmingham has a historical edge in producing world-renowned researchers and contributing to groundbreaking discoveries.
Also, lifestyle is a critical part of the university experience, and Birmingham and Warwick offer distinctly different settings:
- University of Birmingham: Located in Birmingham, the UK’s second-largest city, this university provides an energetic, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Students here can enjoy a bustling urban environment rich with cultural, social, and professional opportunities. If you thrive in a vibrant city, Birmingham’s diverse setting may be ideal for you.
- University of Warwick: Warwick’s campus is situated near Coventry, a city with more of a town-like feel despite its official status. The campus has a tranquil, self-contained environment, appealing to those seeking a close-knit community. While Coventry is quieter than Birmingham, Warwick offers easy access to the historic charm of the town of Warwick and the city amenities in Coventry, balancing a small-town atmosphere with a more relaxed pace of life.
So, if you prefer a dynamic, metropolitan experience, the University of Birmingham, with its vibrant city backdrop, might be the perfect choice. Otherwise, if you lean towards a quieter, campus-centered environment, the University of Warwick’s town-like feel, could be more your style.
