Albany Law - Full Profile

The Law School

Albany Law School is a small, private school located in the heart of New York State’s capital where it has educated leaders since 1851. The institution offers students an innovative, rigorous curriculum taught by a committed faculty.

Albany Law School's outstanding location—the only law school within 90 miles of New York's capital city—offers unparalleled opportunities for students. We connect the classroom to the profession, government, and the community through experienced-based learning, engaged scholarship, and a robust network of alumni and supporters. Our students develop a sophisticated understanding of legal policy and doctrine, a broad range of professional competencies, and a deep commitment to justice and ethical values.

Albany Law School has an affiliation agreement with University at Albany that includes shared programs, and access for students and faculty to learn from one another.

Albany, the home of New York's highest court, federal courts, and the state legislature, is itself a laboratory for the study of law. The area is rich in history, government and culture. Along with a vibrant scene for concerts, restaurants, and shopping, Albany is centrally located for easy access to New York City, Boston, and Montreal, Canada.

Albany Law School shares a 54-acre midtown campus with three other educational institutions and research facilities. Together, the schools attract students from across the country and around the world whose diverse interests and backgrounds enrich the intellectual and social environment for all. Campus amenities include a fitness center, athletic fields, gymnasiums, an art gallery and bookstore.

The Program

Albany Law School offers several different LL.M. study options, plus a program for foreign law graduates.

The LL.M. for Foreign Law Graduates is designed for international graduates who seek an academic program to qualify to take the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) for admission to the New York State bar or other bars. Albany Law School recognizes that foreign-educated lawyers present very different backgrounds and training and we seek to build on those individual differences. Therefore, in addition to regular course work, LL.M. students are eligible to earn up to four credits by enrolling in an in-house clinical program through the Law Clinic & Justice Center, where students represent real clients in actual cases under the close supervision of faculty members. (See the program curriculum for details.)

A conditional admission option is offered for international students who meet all admission requirements except the minimum English language requirement. Students admitted under this program will be required to apply and be accepted into the Intensive English Language Program (IELP) offered by the University at Albany, our affiliate school.

The LL.M for U.S. Graduates offers specializations in:

• Advanced Legal Studies;
• Governmental Administration and Regulation
;
• Health Law;
• Health and Human Rights
;
• Intellectual Property Law
;
• International Law;
• or candidates may design a course of study other than those specialized programs.
