Hello Indian Lawyer.
Thank you for you very quick response. I don't even know you but it appears that we are very similar with tryuing our best to impart knowledge and advice where necessary. I have been opften told that individuals with such qualities will progress to very far in life and will be very successful.
So do you not think that the law firms in the US will not require much individuals there to travel to and from Asia on legal business matters? Or do you think that they will probably just need individuals for their Asian offices.
I would also like to ask you about the assessment process. Is it mostly exam or coursework?

Sorry for the spelling mistakes.
Do you also have to use laptops in your classes and exam in Singapore as it stated on the website that one would require a laptop for the NYU exams as it is compulsory.
And can one have a part-time job while studing in Singapore or is it really rigorous where studying is concerned? Will you be sitting the New York State Bar upon completion?

Did you watch the criket world cup? and did you watch the game between India and England the two weeks ago? India's cricketers were playing in all their glory. I was cheering them on as my best friend is from Hyderabad.

Telbuk.Laptops are a must.In the Summer semester most of them are take home exams and some are in the form of a research papaer. In the NUS semester,it is again the same. The difference being depending on the subject, the mode of assesment might either be a take home exam,a handwritten class exam, research paper or continuous assesment. For more details on mode of assesment on the NUS semester you could look at www.law.nus.sg
I can give you a certain answer on the job front.
The workload is hectic and would keep you busy and so am not sure whether a part time work is a right thing to do.However there are opportunities available if you are willing to take it up.

HI
I am one of the people who applied to this program last year and did not get in. For those who wanted a comparison with their credentials I hope this helps.
I have a Bachelor of Commerce degree from a Canadian university with a "B" average and I have a JD from an Australian university with a 69% average, 1% short of 2nd class honours. I had no working experience and applied while I was in the last year of my JD.
I plan on applying again this year. Further to my credentials above, I have completed a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, required for admission in Australia, and now am admitted as an Australian lawyer.
I hope my credentials assist some applicants in order to gauge your chances.
I dont mean to discourage any applicants as i will be trying again.
Good Luck.

Hi.You are supposed to get your recommendation letters only from the professors who taught you in the LLB course.I would not be able to mention about your scholarship as I am not aware what kind of scholarship it is.So use your discretion and any credential which strenghthens your application needs to be highlighted.

Hi
I will be submitting a recommendation from one of my previous Bosses. The reason is that I did my LLB in 1997 and it's been a long time since I interacted with my professors. I did write to NYU about professional references and they said that if I graudated a long time ago, then professional references would be acceptable. However in case you have recently completed/ will be completing your LLB then it's better to provide academic references.
I am only going to submit one recommendation. The second recommendation is optional so I'm not submitting it.
Cheers
Prashant

it's intringuing that NYU is expected to begin the second round of selections by september, and still they didn't even post information about this year's scholars on their website. I see no info about the Singapura scholars or any announcements, and we are very close to the new application period. I just wonder if they will do all at once or if the organization is just not being able to cope with the busies of starting a program from zero.

Hi
Is there any link for the Singapura scholars? I only found the Hauser Global Scholars. Would be interesting to know the profiles of the persons who have been awarded the Singapura scholarship. :)
Cheers

No on was awarded the SIngapura scholarship for this year.
Mallal, Marshall and the other tution grants.
You could presume that its the same kind of profiles that you may find in the Hauser Global scholars, that would be awarded the Singapura.

Hi
Surprising why no one was awarded the Singapura Scholarship.
The kind of profiles to whom the other schols/ grants have been given seem to all be Toppers in their LLB and other studies.
I'm definitely not a topper with a 54.5 % but would have been in the top 50 out of a batch of 500. The topper in our batch as far as I remember had a 62%. Hopefully my 9 years of work experience will be considered apart from my marks. I am of course submitting essays for the Singapura Scholarship.
Well will hope for the best. :)
Thanks for your replies.

Hi
Just for your info Indian Lawyer, I've worked on some of the biggest disinvestment transactions in India when I was with Crawford Bayley & Co, Mumbai for example Maruti Udyog, IBP, ONGC, HPCL (which was finally not allowed by the Supreme Court of India), Engineers India Limited.
I also did 4 years of litigation at District Court, High Court and Supreme Court level before shifting to corporate law, which is definitely proving to be a big asset even in the corporate transactions.
Plus at the present moment I'm personally advising on large projects in the Oil & Gas sector and the Hydro Power sector apart from other smaller transactions.
One thing for sure running one's own law firm is a far more challenging experience than I possibly imagined and it's great learning also. :)
I've also enrolled recently for a 2 year Master of Business Laws course (distance learning) from National Law School of India University (NLS). Of course my preference would obviously be to study full time at NYU@NUS. The NLS course is also very tough especially while working and it requires a lot of self study and research (which I enjoy doing).
So how much study do you have to do everyday apart from the classes? Is there a lot of independent research involved in the course? Do the teachers give a lot of homework and study assignments?
Cheers
Prashant

Hi Indian Laywer! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences on the NYU@NUS program. It's certainly a big help for us who plan on applying for the program.
Can you tell me if there are any married lawyers currently enrolled in the program? Anyone with children already? Is there anyone who brought his/her family to Singapore while he/she is studying? I have a 2 year old son and I plan on bringing him with me in case I get accepted. Of course, I plan to bring someone else with me to take care of my son while I'm away at class. I'm just wondering how feasible and doable this is coz it might just be a deal-breaker for me if I can't bring my son.
To all other bloggers -- have you known anyone who did this in the past and how they survived?
Thanks in advance!

Hi.You dont have to be worried at all. There are couples here with babies and one of them stay in the accomodation provided by NUS at Kent ridge and the others have rented out apartments.I dont think you should be worried as long as there is someone to take care of your kid when you are away.
So the answer would be yes, there are students who have children and who have brought their families over here.
Cheers.
