Academic Requirements for NYU/Columbia/Berkley/UPenn etc.

Juneau

Hi all,

Sorry if this has already been answered but I have done a search and haven't found the answer to my question.

What are the general academic requirements for admission onto the NYU LLM for UK students? What grades do those admitted generally have and where does one need to rank in their class to stand a good chance at admission? I am currently at The University of Cambridge studying law and hoping to finish top 20-25% of my class. I figure I've already ruled myself out of Harvard but what about the other universities that I have listed?

Also how much weight do American unis generally give to extracurricular activities? Will it help me at all that I write for the University UN Association Magazine, have interned at the International Criminal Court, done an internship with capital defence attorneys in Texas (published as motion of the month in the Texas Criminal Lawyers Association Magazine). I'm also on the faculty staff-student consultative council etc. etc. Do these things benefit you or are they solely looking for academic achievement as often seems to be the case with the top UK unis (Cambridge/Oxford)?

Sorry for the long post! I just have no idea how hard or otherwise it is to be accepted onto the LLM programs of the top american unis!

Dude

I'd say you have an excellent shot at getting into the above LLMs, even Harvard & Yale would not be out of your sights. I hear stanford and columbia favors strong professional experience, so you might get screwed on that point.

I'm from a top Aussies LLB, relative recent grad with very decent professional experience (not exceptional). My ranking is also decent (top 35-40%), with very good extracurriculars (probably not as high profile extracurri as yours)--- I got into several top 10s. Didn't bother applying to Harv/Yale/stan etc. I'll prob go to NYU, haven't decided yet.

In my experience (and people I talk to), UK LLM weighs rankings and professional experience very heavily--- whereas, US LLMs look also into extracurrculars and life experiences to get indication of character traits and leadership potential. I know of fellow Aussies who graduated at top, but got rejected by all US LLMs, but got into LSE & Kings.

A LLB graduate from Cambridge with your rankings is very safe, provided you can find a compelling reason to get US LLM before professional experience. I wouldn't worry if I were you. I wouldn't be suprised if you got into Harv or Yale, I know of top 20% grads from my LLB with similar profile as yours, getting into both Yale and Harv. You might need a couple years of experience for Stan & Columbia though.
