Just out of curiosity, did those with offers from colleges hear by email or post?
Posted Apr 20, 2012 12:22
On the question of whether some ppl heard by mail/email/phone/pigeon-mail/smoke-signals while other ppl heard by text/MorseCode/telegram, bear this earlier post in mind:
The Colleges will make their decisions at radically different times and in radically different ways. They are different and quite autonomous institutions with their own processes.
It is a waste of time and energy to worry about what is going on behind the ivy-covered walls of one college or another, or why you've not heard from college "A" whereas your pal has heard already from college "B".
And for 99.99% of classes and individuals, the college you end up in will not affect your BCL/Mjur classes or education at all. That is to say, everyone goes to the same seminars and classes and tutorials.

I received an offer 5 weeks ago but have still not received anything via traditional mail.
I should add that I have not accepted the offer either but usually one still gets the offer sent via mail, right? Or doe Oxford and Cambridge operate differently? I remember being sent a fancy brochure by LSE straight after I received the offer via email.
Or do I just have to be a little more patient?

Still waiting for news from Merton. I'm an admitted MLF student... Although I haven't accepted, yet...

It's one of the oldest college, really beautiful, I've been hesitating a lot with this one. I just heard that the food was not excellent...

Thank you for this! May I ask why your hesitating is as a choice?
Thanks again.

No word regarding college (St. John's noted as preference) or funding.

As I said, I hesitated between Exeter and Brasenose, because both are very central, old and beautiful colleges, and finally I chose the latter because I heard that the food is better there (I'm French, so it's very important for me, you know^^), and that the accomodations are nicer and nearer to the Law faculty.
But Exeter is even older, both are great.

Can someone please confirm something for me?
Does it matter - in terms of handing materials in to tutors/getting stuff marked - as to whether that tutor is not part of your college.
E.g. if your contract law (e.g.) tutor - as teaching is centralised within the law faculty - reigns from Merton - does it matter that you go to a different college... E.g. for the taking of tutorials etc.
Are tutorials as per lectures all centralised in the law faculty also - with no bearing on college place?

...
Assuming you are asking about the BCL/MJur, the answer is that your college does not really matter for these purposes whatsoever. The teachers of each BCL/MJur subject arrange tutorials with them (or with other tutors) regardless of student's college and teacher's college.
There are sometimes incredibly minor exceptions to this rule (eg reports suggest some tutors at a certain college in Evidence prefer to offer tutorials to their students). But this is very, very, very much the tiny exception.
College choice for BCL/Mjur students principally affects where you live, who you eat/drink/party with, etc.
ps: FWIW, hesitating about Colleges on the basis of food quality is pretty questionable reasoning. Most postgraduate students will have access to their own kitchens and/or to the plethora of restaurants in Oxford.

Got my letter in the mail from Mansfield College, had Merton as my choice when applying. TBH don't care that I didn't get Merton plus the sound of a college founded for Nonconformists is funny when taken out of context.
Has anyone heard anything about the outcome of funding applications? The financial guarantee is painful to say the least.

no, still no news (regarding both funding and colleges)
Posted Apr 26, 2012 23:42
same - no news either way (st johns + funding)
Posted Apr 27, 2012 00:17
Hi guys, just to let you know that I contacted Geraldine Malloy about funding a while back & she let me know that the law faculty scholarships will not be decided upon until "the end of April, possibly early May".
Which probably means mid-late May.
