Yeah it definitely sounds like the guy in the office was misinformed. Perhaps the next time one of us calls we could ask to speak to someone a little higher up than the person who just answers the general phone line. Can't hurt to ask.
Just to add, when I called the office a few weeks back I spoke to a very nice soft spoken woman who after asking me a bunch of questions to confirm my identity was able to look my file up and let me know that it was complete but that no decision was made.
So I guess if you call and are just given an answer without them asking for information about you, it might be advisable to call back at a different time and see if someone different answers the phone.
Waiting to hear from NYU

The guy I spoke with actually did the same thing- asked me a bunch of questions and then specifically looked up my application. Nonetheless, he said they had not administered any decisions.
When I called about three weeks ago, a woman told me the latest they would let me know is May (although the website says they technically could wait until June). So hopefully it is not too much longer for any of us who have not heard.

Hmmmm very interesting. I sincerely hope that the person who told you that you should hear by May was a little more informed than the person who told you that no decisions have been mailed out.
Do you think there is any downside to calling. Probably not as the people who answer the phone are not on the adcomm but I still get a little worried.

Yah I get a bit worried as well. I honestly dont think I will call anymore.
Posted Apr 30, 2007 17:45
Oh my Lord-are y'all kidding? Come on guys-chill out. If you really think that they're going to say "hey admissions committee, joe smith has called 3 times in the last month to check on his status. It's annoying me and forcing me to do my job as a receptionist and actually work. So I think that you should deny his application"-and that the committee is going to say "sure thing-DENIED, OVERACHIEVER!" you're nuts. Calm down guys.

I think you may have misunderstood my statement about calling too much. Of course I dont think that the people who answer the phone are going to have that much of an influence over the decision, but regardless of that I do think it would probably be more advisable not to call them repetitively and create a negative impression of yourself. It does say on the website that they are very busy and phone calls about application statys shouldnt be made. I do recall inone phone call I made to the office the person I spoke to seemed very stressed and busy.
You might be surprised how sometimes things are made easier when you are polite to someone and they like you. Sure its not going to get us into NYU, but by being nice and not creating a negative impression of yourself, you never know if someone might remember you and help things along or expedite something,

Good point. Where are you guys going to go if NYU says no? Georgetown or Florida?
Posted Apr 30, 2007 22:11
I will be at Georgetown. I currently go to law school in DC, and I want to practice in DC or NY. I don't really have any interest in spending time in the south even for a year. I guess you could say I have that complex of believing there is not much of a world outside of the Northeast/Mid-atlantic corridor.

ill be going to g town as well if NYU does not pan out. I want to work for the government and eventually work in NY, where I am from, so G-town would be the better choice then UF for me personally.

Where are you guys currently in law school? I'm at Texas Tech. I'm still trying to decide between Georgetown and UF if NYU doesn't pan out. On the one hand, I used to work for a Dallas Congressman in D.C. and have remained good friends with him, and he is still in office in Washington. His father, who I am also friends with is a Partner at Holland & Knight in D.C., and is also the former Director of the FBI. Needless to say, those are pretty good connections to have. It's just hard for me to figure out which one has more "pull" in Texas-both seem to have some. Thoughts? I'm likely going to send the $500 second deposit to Georgetown that's due May 4, just to keep it open.

Why would I start this LLM hustle with this kind of connections? Hmmm....
Typically, you don't need an LLM in taxation to become a tax attorney, especially if you personally know some atttorney that high up. Generally speeking, LLM is an option for 3 groups of current students: (1) foreign students, (2) domestic students from non-top tier scools who did well in school, or (3) from top tier scools, but not top 20.

I myself fall into category number 3, with that information it shouldn't be that hard to figure out where I go. I personally dont really have any contacts. I did get an interview in the fall based thanks to a professor but I supposedly missed that position by the slimmest of margins.

So...thoughts on my situation? (And I wasn't trying to brag-it's the internet, so I wouldn't exactly do it to try to win admiration points).

Hey Texas,
Why dont you think those connections have panned out for you thus far? As for knowing a congressman, that could be helpful, but lots of people know congressmen. I think his father would be a better connection, but how well do you know him exactly? Also, know a partner is a good thing, but the best it can do I feel is get your foot in the door and earn you an interview and maybe a favorable look if your interview isnt as spectacular as they like. The connections alone are not going to give you the job.
Its also important to know that no matter how many connections you have, the big firms are very snobby and do look at where you went to law school. You have to have done very well where you went for them to give you any serious consideration.

I can't say they haven't panned out for me so far-I've been set on getting the LL.M. in Tax since I started law school. At my summer clerkship, I told them from the getgo that was my plan. But you make a good point about how far connections will get you.

Hi all. This is my first post on here.
I just wanted to add to the NYU stats. I (a domestic) applied just at the end of March and am pretty sure my application was complete before April 1st. I am not applying for Tax, but for the Trade Regulations (with IP). As of yet I've heard narry the peep from them.
I have heard from Cardozo (IP) and Boston (IP), and both those apps were in around the same time. Still waiting to hear from GT and Fordham.

Hey ggb welcome to the thread. You should have received an email confirmation when your application became complete, might want to check for that to make sure it was before april.
I dont know anything about the trade program at NYU. I know they are really big on tax so maybe the competition is a little less stiff for you. Good luck!

Hi guys,
I ve been put in the wait list for LLM admissions this year at NYU. Are there any good chances for me to get scholorship if admitted? Is it a bar to obtain scholorship for those applicants who have been put in the wait list?
Good luck.

Kar, are you domestic or foreign applicant? When did you application become complete?
I would probably guess that if scholarships are merit based and you were waitlisted rather than admitted right away you probably will not receive a scholarship.

How will they be notifying those on the waitlist of the final decision? e-mail or regular mail?
