NYU results are out!

Mio, did they state the award of scholarship in your admission letter which was signed by J.H.H. Weiler? Or if they said it in a separate letter? Thanks.

Information for schorlarship including Hauser is written in the offer letter and signed by J.H.H. Weiler.
Good Luck! :)

To gmx: Cong!!! You must have a very strong background. I also applied Hauser but awarded Vanderbilt and RA. I have the same concern that whether I can wait till March for HLS. BTW, I apply taxation, so from this perspective, guess I should accept NYU. Any suggestions? Although there's no deadline for Vanderbilt but it's on a first-come first-serve policy this year...........

Yup, it was all in one letter. For the Grotius too.

Hi folks!

I received NYU package yesterday and got Hauser Scholarship. Although Im deeply aware of the prestige that Hauser has, I always wanted to go to Harvard and I havent heard anything from them, and I have to decide weather to accept NYU by the end of the next week. I would appreciate if you could comment the relevance/prestige of Hauser vs. Harvard. Thank you very much in advance!

Hi all,

I'm in a similar position to gmx - not sure whether to wait for Harvard, or to accept Vanderbilt and Research Associate position at NYU. But I have a few questions which might help me decide - if anyone knows the answers you'd have my gratitude!

1. How many LLM students are there at NYU/HLS?
2. What does the NYU research associate position really involve? I've been offered it, but I don't remember specifically applying for it!

Thanks all.

I know some people that live in US and are applying, and it seems that nobody had any news. I see some possibilities: (i) they sent the international mail before; (ii) the internal regular mail arrives later; or (iii) it is just a coincidence, and our decisions were not sent yet. But, whatever is happening, YOU ARE JUST RIGHT! I will try to stop thinking about it, or I'll get crazy! No news is no news, right? Good luck!

We're all in the same boat. These other schools are certainly taking their sweet time. I am hoping that all the Grotius/Vanderbilt recipients out there all are also waiting for the other results to come out before deciding.

I should think for the Hauser recipients [congratulations!], the NYU-HLS dilemma should be a no-brainer [unless money is no object at all]. Full tuition, housing, a stipend, plus the chance to work closely with NYU professors is a pretty sweet deal. The patina provided by the Hauser should more than make up for not going to HLS [particularly if you want a job in the US - esp NY].

On the other hand, friends who have gone to the top 3 have advised that if one does get a chance to go to Yale, Stanford, or HLS, we should jump at the chance, even if we have to pay. Who knows?

If you get into Yale though, it's a different story. Definitely go there. Plus they are very generous when it comes to financial aid, so the money shouldn't be an issue.

As far as I know, there are about 425-450 students at NYU, and around 200 at HLS. I've been told that the research associate position basically means [at the minimum] meeting with your mentor a few times each month about your particular area of interest, and at the maximum, having written work directed by the professor, or assisting your mentor with his/her research.

Hope my two cents helps!

I was PM'ed with similar questions, and to summarize my answers:

1) With due respect to Ivan and company, I think the prestige, for lack of a better term, of a school in the "top" tier like HLS is incomparable. This brings benefits such as a plus in job hunting, the select student body, the global network, and the fact that all these are for life. I mean, how many law schools have been featured in movies from Paper Chase to Legally Blonde and have been etched onto the American (and even global) psyche?

2) I don't think a prestigious scholarship from a less "prestigious" institution makes up in that people often see just the school brand name. The prestigious scholarship plus good grades may readily make up in a job hunting context, but that's just one context.

3) A scholarship and not having to worry about money is great. However, if you get a job, you'll realize that money for a one-year LLM is a very short-term concern. If money is a concern, then you're either in a field of study where scholarships are readily justifiable, or perhaps a fresh graduate who will be allowed to tap financial assistance anyway.

4) Research associate positions are readily had in HLS, and you can even work on the research projects of a professor you never took a class under. You can also approach most professors to supervise your research. As with your professional contacts and peers, of course you have to invest in building a relationship with a professor.

5) There are about 160 LLMs at HLS, not 200, unless you count the SJDs and visiting researchers. They take classes with JDs.

6) But, as always, I would consider the specific field of interest, although the general reputation and unrelated courses should be given much weight as well.

Again, I make these comments with all sincerity and due respect to Ivan and company. I had to choose between HLS and NYU, too, a year ago. I asked for an extension and held out, but it was hardly an easy choice before the HLS results came out.

You can always write the schools keeping you in suspense, of course, and explain your predicament.

Mio and josepidal, thanks very much for your answers - they're very helpful. Having considered those points and having read through all of the literature NYU sent along with its letter, I think I'm going to wait for HLS to make its decision. It's not just that Harvard has global name recognition (though that is important); I genuinely think it's stronger in my particular field of interest, constitutional law.

Mio, if this board is anything to go by, I imagine that a lot of Grotius/Vanderbilt candidates will be holding off on their replies to NYU, and agonising over the choice between New York and other top schools!

Constitutional law? Then I honestly think you'd want to meet everyone in HLS's bench, from Larry Tribe to Charles Fried. While that is obvious, you might also note the visiting professors and the various speakers who come over and speak on Con Law related subjects. The Federalist Society chapter here sponsors some good debates, and even liberals enjoy them.

I also think the people doing research on various Con Law topics are an amazing resource as well. This year, for example, one of Mark Tushnet's LLM students tried to put together an informal LLM only Comparative Con Law reading group with him. There are synergies generated by the large LLM class size and the number of noted faculty members in this field, I guess.

Good luck.

Dear Figaro, Josepidal, and everybody else,

Thank you for your answers. I'm sorry for hearing from me with such delay I'm right now in closing one big deal for my company on which I've been working for the last couple of months so I litteraly don't have time to eat, and on the other hand have to decide what to do.

Well, I see that a lot of people will try to extend their decision for NYU.

If someone of Hauser other scholarship recipients rejects the offer, does it mean they may offer it to another student or they just "keep it to themselves"?
