NYU@NUS 2013-2014

Greengills,

Faced the same dilemma, between columbia and nyu@nus. Still undecided.

Depends on how much scholarship you've got from NYU@NUS-I would put that as a major criterion. I've got 25k as the Dean's award and am a bit iffy about the program as a result.

Bornhoaxer,

Pardon for joining your conversation but with that premise, would you say that a full tuition scholarship would be enough to convince you? I'm still struggling over this dilemma.

Perlas,

A full tuition scholarship would've convinced me. I'm coming from an angle of the LLM experience being worthwhile either in terms of the exposure or of the school in terms of pure brand value with NYU@NUS falling in the former and Columbia falling in the latter. Hence, for pure exposure I would be inclined to take up NYU@NUS only if a substantial scholarship is offered.

Exposure vs branding seems to be a good way of putting it. I do wonder which has more value now? You can't easily get jobs either way but I wonder which one carries more weight in the practical sense? After all, one's goal after a LLM is (most likely) to improve one's professional standing or qualification..

Yeah, I've also got 25k as the Dean's award. Don't know how much more exposure the NYU@NUS-I program will result in when compared to a traditional LLM in the US. You only get 3 (? ) months in the US after all, and most of the exposure is in Singapore. How much do you benefit from one as compared to the other?

I guess it depends where you want to work? Although I doubt that even if we spend a year in US we'll be able to find work there right now..

I have been labouring over the decision of NYU@NUS/NYU/LSE (still awaiting from oxbridge). I was accepted with a 23k dean's award. My final decision has been that I will either go with LSE or oxbridge, if it is possible. Although the program in Singapore sounds fantastic, I really feel that branding plays a massive role today. I think the Asian angle is excellent, particularly in terms of opportunities in the region at the moment, but I think the cost outweighs this benefit to a degree. I think it really depends on your financial situation and goals upon graduation from the LLM, but for me I think the correct decision will be elsewhere.

I guess branding does play a huge role today. I'm open to exploring a career in either Singapore or the US, so I guess either of the programs make sense. I would prefer to study for a more substantial amount of time in the US though. On the other hand, there's a scholarship for Singapore. So I guess for me it comes down to personal preference vs. cost. Unless I'm missing something?

I totally agree. In the end I think that it won't make much difference spending 3 months or a full year. We get the same degree as the other 400 LLM students in New York and have access to the same job fairs and employment information. At least in my case, the fact that the program is taught in Asia and we receive an additional degree from NUS gives me and edge compared to the thousand of LLM students that receive their degree each year. I spoke to a former student and he was really happy with the program and recommend it over the other options that I have available (other two top-14 US Law Schools) As regards to branding, there are just a handful of universities than can compete with the NYU degree.

Has anyone still waiting for results heard anything? I wonder if they will start releasing new round of decisions after 27th.

Also did anyone receive the Singapura scholarship?

I was waiting for you to write that.
I think, many have asked for extensions on their offers and have been granted time. It not going to be until after next week atleadt that any offers are dispatched. Though I really hope I am wrong.

Hello. I've just found out that there is an additional requirement to be elegible for admission in the NY Bar. You not only have to successfully pass the bar exam but also complete 50 hours of pro bono work. It appears that there are no exceptions for LLM students. More info here:

http://www.nycourts.gov/attorneys/probono/FAQsBarAdmission.pdf

From what I have been able to gather, some schools will allow you to participate in volunteer work that will qualify as pro bono. For example Duke:

http://law.duke.edu/sites/default/files/images/career/NYS%20pro%20bono%20requirement%20for%20admission%20after%20January%202015_0.pdf

I'm not sure if there is any alternatives that can be taken from Singapore in order to comply with this requirement. This information is new to me and I was unable to find any reference to it in the NYU webpage (there is information on the new rules but nothing specific to the 50-hour pro bono rule).

Did you know this?

Yes.

My assumption is that schools will make an effort to assist LL.M students in fulfilling this rule. I believe this has been a somewhat a requirement for jds already. Anyway, I will most certainly inquire the schools about it when making my final decision.

When it comes to NYU@NUS, I wonder if they are exempt from that rule, since they already have a special order on it. ANyone who accepted the offer care to share some light?

On another note class of 2014 seemed to be initially the last one able to do the NY bar. I wonder if this could have been one of the factors that influenced the decision to cancel the program. I mean maybe the NY bar was not so understanding anymore...

As far as I am aware, the pro bono requirements (if any) would not apply to the NYU@NUS students as the eligibility is as per the order. Cheers!
