Columbia LLM 2017

The thing about this method is how do they manage to rank applicants? I mean, they should go through every application before handing out decisions... Otherwise they might fill all seats and then find out someone that has better credentials (?!)

Maybe the process isn't entirely random. I suspect —from what I've seen on the application tracker— that applicants from the same country tend to receive admission decisions on the same day or week. Perhaps they evaluate regular-cycle applications based on a geographic criterion. Should we be asking where admitted candidates are from, instead of when they submitted their application?

Info from Columbia:

"LL.M. decisions are made on a rolling basis, which means that we evaluate applications at random. The date you submitted your application often has no bearing on when you will receive a decision. Some candidates will have a decision in early January, others in late April. If you have not yet received a decision, it most likely means that the Committee simply has not yet reviewed your application, so you should not worry! We strive to give every candidate an answer by the end of April."

Well, actually the question was when their status changed to "complete". I did assume that the day of submission has nothing to do with the decision. But I was wondering if the day of completion has something to do. Anyway, it finally seems that it is completely random.

Just had this stray thought that with an average life expectancy of, say, 80 years we spend approximately 0.4% of our lives anxiously waiting for an LLM admissions decisions. Oh well.

I also think that we might be reducing our life expectancy a little bit too:).

Congratulations Bhohr and taptwice! Since collecting stats is an oddly comforting process - do you recall when you received your "application complete" emails? :)
