Lawmann,
drop this line, my friend! The waste is mine, so it is MY call!
You know you will not convince me by repetition. Let Oxford decides. If I am not to receive an offer, I will let you know, so you can flatter yourself on thinking you were right along the way.
The LLM I entered had a ratio of more than 12 candidates per offer (Oxford MLF, in its first year, was of about 11 - I know it is another level, just making a point here). The majority of those who entered it were Senior Prosecutors, Judges, State Attorneys, etc. I was just a student and get in. If it is or is not a lame Law School, it does not matter. What matters is that many people told me things alike those you wrote. Just stop trying to dismay me, I am too optimistic for your pessimism! Failing is part of life, nobody wins all the times. Not running for something because of the odds is cowardice, and is not what one would expect for someone who puffs up having 6 Law Degrees (did not know that UK considers being barred to be a Law Degree... in Brazil it is not!)
I could not help notice to google your email. Are you Asian?
Regards

It does not matter what I am.
Being realistic is not cowardice.
I am not trying to dismay you. Just stating the hard facts. Statistics don't lie.
Good luck to you.

One other thing Emanuel.
You cannot equate the quality of 12 applicants to a bottom rank law school with 12 applicants for the Oxford MLF. Just to stress my point.

Never pretended nor intended to. Just stated that others like you tried to tell me similar arguments in the past, and I am still around, going on.
Lawmann, your logic is perfect. I won't deny it. But see that there were only 20 places in the waiting list, and this applicant, from a "bottom place" (name it a hole, if you want) made it. It means that I was one of the 50 most competitive applicants last year (30 offers + 20 positions in the waiting list). So, I guess, the "bottom"ness was not enough to avert the problems you raised.
It is good to argue with you. What I do not get is what you do in a thread like this if you are not willing to apply! Consider that if some John Doe from 'nowhere' is trying, why not the 6 degree-man?
Up, up and away!!!
Oh, just to say it, my offer stands. If I am offered a place, I will buy you a bottle of Black Label in London! If not, I will be expecting your bitter comments next year!

Dear Emanuel, please don't get me wrong. No offence.
I never said that your law school was a bottom place one. I was merely illustrating my point with general examples without specific reference to your case.
I agree that you by being put on wait list for the Oxford MLF can be construed that Oxford had taken cognizance of the standing of your law school.
As I have said before , I applaud you for your achievements. I am sure it was not easy for you. I suppose not many applicants for the MLF has your post LL.B working experience. Any lesser university would have been more than glad to make you an offer.
To sum up, all I was trying to say ( repetition you might say ) was that everything being equal, the quality of the LL.B and quality/ranking of the Law School will stand the applicant in a distinct advantage. Just an advantage. I am sure that the 30 applicants offered a place on the MLF for 2010/2011 are from outstanding law schools. Of course in your case, if Oxford cancels out the 30 successful applicants, you will have made it to the MLF. But as the number of applicants swell for 2011/2012,the competition gets more competitive and the likelihood of getting an offer dwindles. There is always an advantage to apply for the inaugural intake. You have already done that.
Although I have not applied to the MLF for 2011/2012, I personally know of someone who has. So I am interested in following his progress and outcome of the application.
I don't need the MLF. I have already reached the pinnacle of my legal career having practised law for close to 30 years.
I will take you up on your offer. Of course I hope that you will make it this time . Sincerely I do.

I do not get you wrong, my friend. I just know every point you try to make, and I still disagree on its grounds. Let the number of applicants double, or triple - a person from Oxford staff told me they expect the number to drop a little (particularly, I do not believe it - I agree with you, the number will rise).
As I told you before, my application this year is WAAAAAY better done than last year. Had I submitted this last year, I would have had better chances.
Bear in mind that I never thought you said any thing good or bad about my School. It was not really important, as I was just using it to make a point, of not giving up of anything.
Lawmann, I am always an optimistic. So, just commend my perseverance, and let it be!

Emanuel: I think you are getting a little carried away with the (nervous) wait for the results. Hold on a little, I am sure you will make it to the law school you deserve.
Best of luck!

Shabi, I believe you are 100% right. Please, forgive me for sharing so much anxiety with you all. Not my intention, trust me.
The fact is that, on January, I was on vacation from professorship, so I had plenty time to arguing on llm-guide. In Brazil classes start on February and end on June. July is vacation again. Classes start again (another term) on August and end on December.
I thank you for your kindness, but as much optimistic I am, I know that my chances are better this year but not so much better than last year. With the potential raise in the number of the applicants, chances are to be rejected again. I simply cannot stand, however, is how Lawmann is fatalistic, like everything is written in rock and might not change. If so, there wold be no point in life.
I wish you luck too, Shabi! And thank you!

Hi All,
Also an applicant and just found this thread. Unlike most of you, I am currently an undergrad. Heard from Kate and she said we should hear by next Friday, and maybe even earlier- Wednesday or Thursday. So nervous.
Good luck to everyone who applied!

Hi,
Did Kate tell you that we should hear by next Friday?
I applied for the January deadline, but in the first week of Febrauary I received a mail from the admissions office saying that my application will be considered for the May deadline. Though I submitted my application on time, there was a two day delay in submitting one of my trascripts. Did anyone receive the same response?

Hi Sivagurunathan,
Yes, Kate told me that 'everyone' should hear back by next Friday but they are hoping to give the news a few days earlier. All my documentation were submitted on time and, therefore, considered for the January deadline. I'm assuming that since you have been told that your application will be considered for March deadline, then you won't be hearing until May.
It's a bit weird that they now decided to have two deadlines. I wonder how it works in practice, i.e. if they offer 15 places next week and 15 in May? Anyway, that's just me. Best to ring her if you want some more information.
Can I ask if you are an undergrad, professional or an academic? I'm just curious because I am an undergrad and at the open day, everyone else seemed to have been in academia for quite some time or in the legal/banking profession.

Did you write her or did she wrote you?
Hey, Lawmann, time to see if I owe you a bottle of Black Label or if you are going to make fun of me next year, too!!!
Good luck to us all!!!

@SleekGeek : According to the info you heard from Kate, does that include other programme as well e.g. MJur, BCL?
Posted Mar 09, 2011 15:10
@Emmanuel: I contacted Kate to let her know that I received some additional grades and I wanted to know if it was too late to send my updated transcript in. She said this was no longer necessary as decisions were being finalised and that if they were to make me an offer it would be conditional anyway because I have not yet completed my degree. She just said to keep checking our mail from Wednesday onwards as it isn't too long a wait now.
@Advancing Law: I contacted Kate based on my MLF application. I wouldn't know if the information she told me was also relevant to the MJur, BCL etc. If you:
i) had the same deadline
ii) were told you would hear before the 18th and
iii) had the same Committee deciding...
...then I would like to think this means you will also hear next week. That's just my logic, best to call her if you are unsure.

Is anyone else here who applied an undergrad?

Hi Sivagurunathan,
Hi SleekGeek,
I'm a professional, but professional experience does not matter much in their selection process. If you have good grades and if you have submitted a good SOP indicating that you have made an informed decision to study the intersection between law and finance then you will be in.

Hi Sivagurunathan,
That sounds reassuring, thank you. Although, one can only imagine the number of excellent academics and well written, persuasive SOPs!
Good luck!
