LLM 2009/2010 - UCL

Well regardless of the rankings, I would choose between KCL / UCL depending on the specialization. If you're going to do Public International Law, I would opt for UCL. For European Law, its KCL for sure. Finance Law, I personally decided on KCL.

Daniro, you are first registered for the general LLM as in my case then when you arrive there you register for the specialized LLM,,at least thats what I understood. You better call them just to make sure.

Hi everyone. I applied to UCL in January and it wasn't until February when I called them that they updated the system although they had already received my references. I am quite nervous too. Have other offers and I am just really anxious. I really thought I was the only one..

Before I bombard you with questions there are certains things which i would like to tell you.
I am studying for a B.L.S., L.L.B degree (Dual Degree in 5 years). I am in the last year. I have scored 57% in B.L.S. and present average in LLB degree is 52%. from an Indian university (not so famous)
I am also studying LLM in Cyber Law (Distance Learning programme)(Part-time) from one of the top 10 Universities in UK (Name not disclosed). My average grade until now is B (60 %+).
I have completed total three diploma courses (in India) in IPR and Cyber Law.
I have a 5 years work experience as a Legal Trainee.
These are my qualifications. I wish to practice as a Solicitor in London. I have applied for LLM Commercial and Corporate Law in most Universities. Following are some queries which have:
(1) What do you think about my application to QUML, KCL and UCL. Is there any other Universities which you would suggest me to apply for ?
(2) Is it preferable to get admitted in a University situated in London or should i consider the ranking of other Universities also. (E.g. Aberdeen and Nottingham also have been given High Ranking)
(3) How good is it to have a second LLM in UK Law Firms?
(4) I am not yet qualified as a lawyer in India as yet. I will be qualified once I complete my B.L.S., L.L.B. degree in July 2009. But LPC and QLTT require a certificate of eligibility from SRA. The SRA requirements are that I should be working for 2 years with a SRA recognised lawyer after I complete the LLB degree. So does the LLM actually wave this requirement?

Dear Legal_India, some answers to your questions:

1) What do you think about my application to QUML, KCL and UCL. Is there any other Universities which you would suggest me to apply for ?
You can also apply to LSE and Edinburgh (Scotland).

(2) Is it preferable to get admitted in a University situated in London or should i consider the ranking of other Universities also. (E.g. Aberdeen and Nottingham also have been given High Ranking)
I do not think it is preferable to be accepted by a Uni located in London, i guess it also depends on your interests. Per exampke cambridge and oxford are not in London and are excellent universities. Nottingham its also a very high ranked university as weel as Aberdeen. It depends on your field of specialization, the amount of money u have to support yourself (london is more expensive) and any other personal needs or interests you may have.

(3) How good is it to have a second LLM in UK Law Firms?
I guess its good of course but once again it depends on your field of specialization (do u really need too llm's?) those are some things u have to consider first.

(4) I am not yet qualified as a lawyer in India as yet. I will be qualified once I complete my B.L.S., L.L.B. degree in July 2009. But LPC and QLTT require a certificate of eligibility from SRA. Not that I know,,,you may have to ask the university u are interested in directly. In my case I m a qualified lawyer since the year 2007 a month after i graduated from law school (here in my country you just need to fill some paper work and you are done, they dont force to work for a while first or take an exam, although they are considering the exam because there are too many lawyers here)

HOPE THIS HELPS. IF YOU ARE GOING TO APPLY DO IT NOW BECAUSE ITS KINDA LATE ALREADY!

GOOD LUCK!!!

Hey does anyone know what the best accomodation for graduate law students at ucl is? My LLM Criminal Law offer finally arrived (hurrah!) and I'm now thinking about where I will stay. Are any of the Halls of Residence particularly suitable for graduates? Don't want to end up with a load of 1st years vomiting on each other as college freedom kicks in!(not that I have anything against 1st years having a good time, just a case of been there done that!) :)

Another question-does anyone know what UCL's policy is if you accept their offer and then later want to withdraw your acceptance? I ask just in case Cambridge accept me, which is rather a long shot but you never know!

I send my application in december '08 got an unconditional offer early february '09 asked them if i accept the offer is it possible to turn it down later on and they said, "yes" , but, if you give in a deposit -then and only then- a penalty charge will incur.
hope this helps

Hey Conor remember you cannot choose where to stay because they dont give you that option at all. when you receive the accommodation form they just ask you which is the most important thing that your accommodation should have, either:
ensuite
closeness to UCL
self catered or catered
and some other things i dont remember
YOU CAN JUST CHOOSE ONE,,JUST ONEEE, so be wise

in my case i wanted self catered and ensuite accommodation

you also have to state how much per week you will pay,,so if you know which hall you like you can put the price of that hall and so son. I put 145 per week which is the price of most ensuite rooms etc.

GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE THIS HELPS

U havent received the accommodation form right? it is also enclosed with the offer reply form and the acceptance letter. They also enclose scholarship details and application form.

Hey Pucca thanks for your replies. I received the letter package from them and sent back my acceptance. Hurray! However in very unlawyerly fashion I did not read the accomodation form carefully and didn't know you could only pick one important factor. Mine will have to be proximity to UCL I think but I'd like to be with postgrads and in en suite accomodation as well. However one can't have everything! I think I will ring the accomodation office and see if they make an effort to put PGs together. Still one should not complain, UCL is located in a great part of London. Did you apply fot that Law teaching course? Sounds interesting.

Im a final yr Irish law student, hoping to specialise in criminology and criminal justice. Got the same conditional offer as yourself. Why are you moving from the lse to ucl? Is it just the old adage of doing one's masters in a different place to one'e undergraduate degree or is ucl better for what you are interested in? Any idea which college is better for criminal law? And finally what is the lse like overall? Sorry for all the questions!
