 how are you quite sure about it? nobody has reported receiving an interview request yet! Is this your gut feeling or do you have information that requests were actually sent out?

Hi All, 

I'm posting this just to let you know that if you haven't received an email about interviews yet, don't fret. 

I received an email this afternoon inviting me to an interview tomorrow with my proposed supervisor.  Apparently they are running badly behind schedule and are regretfully sending out invites at very short notice. 
So don't panic if you haven't heard from them yet!

Just received my email for the interview. I don’t remember when I submitted my application, but it was almost near the deadline

I received an email this afternoon inviting me to an interview tomorrow with my proposed supervisor. 
So don't panic if you haven't heard from them yet!


Thanks. When did you submit your application? 


I submitted mine on the deadline.

I applied quite early 2 months before deadline but no interview request. Devastated

I haven’t received an interview mail either :( 
Really sad! Let’s just hope that we receive mails sooner, rather than later and stay positive! Guys, it would be great if you could all post updates as and when you receive them - my heartfelt thanks in advance!

I received the interview invite today. What does an interview invite mean? Can we construe anything from the invite? Does it mean the proposal is not good enough for a direct offer? 


An interview is a good sign. What follows is advice I was given from a friend with an inside track on the law PhD application process at another top UK university. 

Basically, these application processes follow a similar logic to job applications. Almost nobody is deemed 'good enough' for a direct offer without interview, so the invite to interview means that (1) your application has impressed the degree committee enough for them to refer it to your proposed supervisor, and (2) that your proposed supervisor has also deemed it strong enough to merit further consideration. 

Except for a few highly unusual cases where one has an extremely strong application and are already well known at the institution and to their supervisor, an interview is the next necessary step to getting admitted to the PhD programme. I don't know about Cambridge, but I know that at another top university, there is a roughly 20% admission rate, with the cull from the initial application stage to interview stage being 60%, meaning that about 40% get called to interview, and of those, about half get offered places in the end.

I am guessing interview requests will still be sent tomorrow but that’s about it. They can’t possibly interview people on Saturday or Sunday. 
The timeline is similar to last year. Movements on PAO should be around 8 Feb

Would the people who received interview emails mind sharing if they’re international or UK students? I read somewhere that they send out emails to those who applied for funding earlier, and a lot of the funding opportunities are only available for home students. Thanks!

This is my second year applying. Last year I received the interview invitation on 13 jan and did the interview on 19 jan. They recommended me but no one was available to be a supervisor: one of the potential supervisors chose another candidate and the other had no supervising slots available. This year, I received the interview invitation on 19 jan and the interview will happen on 23 jan. One of the potential supervisors already interviewed me last year. Unless you have very good reason, leave these forums, they will only leave you anxious. My wife did not receive an interview invitation last year and was extremely sad until she got a direct offer from the faculty months later. It is impossible to predict what will happen.
