National University of Singapore - LL.M & PhD Applications for 2010 Now Open

Hi Ana!

I got the same answer from NUS that we can only pay by bank draft. I called my bank and asked them to issue a bank draft in the name of NUS. The draft will then be sent by DHL to the University. Not very practical, this payment mode. And not cheap either...

NUS told me that payment can only be done form 6 August, so why can you make payment now?

I am completely in agreement with junjessica, I am sure the requirement to pay the fees would arise only in the second week of August. By then, we would have sufficient time to open account with a local bank at Singapore. This should address concerns of higher cost incurred in getting DD prepared at a foreign bank and also it would be easier for those, at whose home country DDs do not form part of usual banking practices.

Hello everyone!

I am one of the students currently enrolled in the NYU@NUS program and I'm sure we will share a lot of courses next semester!

Any Europeans participating in the program?

All of you can really look forward to the program. Singapore is great and NUS is a very good university with a beautiful campus. I have been here for almost 3 months now and don't want to miss it anymore.

Regarding housing: I can't recommend Evan's Lodge that much. A lot of ppl from our batch regretted staying there even for a short period of time. If you want to stay at a student hostel in the beginning, you should check out the East Lodge hostels on the web. The one in Joo Chiat is quite nice (thus far from university). The Clementi one is quite close to university and the rooms are much better than those in Evan's Lodge. However, it definitely makes sense to look out for a condo or hdbwith some classmates. I found a beautiful appartment close to NUS and pay just 100 SGD more than for the hostel.

Hope to see many of you soon in Singapore,

Florian

Dear all!

I'm in Singapore! :)

I'm staying at Evans Lodge and have already met one of my co-students from IBL program. Evans Lodge is not that bad (at least for the moment :))

I have opened a bank account in DBS this morning. It was fast and easy. I needed my passport and IPA form.

To flo2323: I'm from Europe :)

Take care,
Anna.

Hi Everyone.. I wanted to know if you are all carrying ur laptops from your home countries or do you have any plans of purchasing one from Singapore... which is a better option - home countries or S'pore?

Would be helpful if some of the previous year students can comment on whether there are any student discount/other schemes in Singapore if we purchase a laptop from Singapore.. any other info is also welcome!

thanks,

Hi,

Actually, I had a plan to purchase MacBook Pro in Singapore, but haven't found the right shop yet. Everything is quite expensive in Singapore...

To nfd79: could't reply to your PM, please check your settings.

Take care,
Anna.

Ana/samd:

You could also try enquiring about the same on registration day at NUS. I understand various companies like Apple, Fujitsu, Lenovo and HP have a representative stationed at NUS to help students procure laptops at ease to avail NUS Laptop Ownership Scheme.

Else you also might want to try Sim Lim Square at Bugis, there is some room for bargaining, even though not too much.

Further, for those who started in the IBL course I am also happy to pass on the contacts of the agent who helped a few of us getting our flats, since she was very helpful and for those who want to learn Mandarin in Shanghai the contacts of our Mandarin teacher, which was also very good.

Cheers

Wud anyone here have an idea whether plug points and sockets in India and Singapore are similar. Dat is, if electrical appliances like a laptop are brought from India, whether they'll work properly in Singapore. If yes, whether a connector is required? Tried looking it up in Google, but most of it was too technical to understand...

Hi Faithhope, plug point and socket in Singapore are different from others, however dont worry about it, u will get a connector here easily for your usage of electrical devices. Just drop at Mustafa and buy some (I suggest Mustafa bcoz its quite cheap over there in comparison to other stores like Fairprice :D)

Hey everyone!

I was to join the general llm course this ( AY 2011 )year but have deferred it due to health reasons. i want to know what are the prospects for indian students in getting a job in s'pore post completion of the course?

Secondly this Q is for indian students, is there any benefit in getting jobs in india after completing my masters from singapore? do law firms value this course in india? as opposed to doing my llm from indian itself..

How have your respective courses been so far? the experience, learning etc?

Too many questions i know but I'm extremely confused. please help!! :(
