University of Michigan LLM 2020-2021

dnunes

Hi everyone! I'm part of the Michigan LLM Class of 2019. Let me know if I can help if you have any questions regarding the application process or the course itself!

dnunes : when did you get your offer in 2018, please?

Also, what about scholarship?

How many in a batch get the grotius fellowship? What can we expect it to cover?

Hi! I received my offer on Jan 5th. But there's no need to worry if you haven't got an answer yet - they have always made admission decisions until the end of March.

They let me know the decision regarding scholarship on March 26th. Decisions regarding scholarships are always sent after mid-March.

My estimate is that around 1/3 of the class received financial aid from the law school. My scholarship covered part of the tuition, but that can't be seen as a general rule, because the exact amount of financial assistance depends on each person's credentials and financial situation.

Thanks! did you stay in the US after the program?

No, my job was waiting for me in my home country so I came back after taking the NY Bar exam in July.

Any more updates anyone?

Just had to share one thing.

I hate them for mentioning in their website and the application form that "All applications which are complete at our office by the deadline have the same chances for admission. Applications which are completed after January 31 will be reviewed on a rolling basis."

That's why I submitted on January 30, and the application was complete on the same day.
But, Dora-Maria replied to my email which had me asking "why are you rolling admissions?" as follows: "Most of the timing depends on when the application was complete at our office, but a significant part of it also is dictated by each application itself."

Man! Don't give wrong info in your university websites. I would have submitted much earlier if I knew your godforsaken procedure.

Everything about UMich has been great. But then they have messed up with this one important thing. And it's killing me.

I submitted my application on the 31st but I am yet to receive a confirmation from Michigan about my application being complete

Yesterday I was told my application is complete (it is just an email), I sent my application online, on the deadline.

Yeah so I wrote to them and they responded back saying your application is complete and you will receive a decision by the end of March or mid-April at the latest.

I just got an offer from Michigan! :D

The offer letter was an email, which read, inter alia, "Congratulations! I am very happy to be able to inform you today that we would be delighted to have you join us in Michigan as a member of our LLM class of 2020-21."

Dora-Maria said that they would airmail the formal letter with a colorful view book (excited for that, too) in a few days, and that additional emails which will include critical, detailed information will follow.

Good luck to those who are yet to get their offers, cheers!! :D

Congrats NepAtty! Fantastic news. I'm still waiting - radio silence from my end. Fingers crossed. Did they mention when financial aid decisions will be made?

Hey, Melbourne Attorney thanks very much! :)
They roll admissions, in a different sorta way. You'll hear from them soon, godwilling!

About your question, yes, Dora-Maria replied as follows" ...fellowships are considered in a separate, second round. At that point, we will consider all students who were admitted and had requested financial aid. Our committee will meet in mid-March, so I should have news for you in this regard around March 18-20." :) She was KIND ENOUGH to state this I would say! :D

Hey is there a deadline by which you need to accept your place? And how much is the initial deposit?

Yes, April 1. And it didn't appear that they require a deposit, unlike other law schools. They are super good people and treat us super greatly, and we should reciprocate. :)

How many of those who have got their offers watched the Webinar?

Good luck to those awaiting their (acceptance) decision. :) (Y)

P.S. they also send the offer package by airmail. My offer package was posted by them on February 20/21, and I expect receiving it in around a week from now. Excited!

Hi all. I got accepted into Michigan. However, there's a twist. They said they couldn't offer me a place on the LL.M program but said that they have instead offered me a place on the Master of Advanced Corporations Laws program because it was an "exclusive group" offered to "accomplished lawyers" from around the globe and that it would be more suitable for me as I would be studying amongst the "highest caliber colleagues."

What do you guys make of this?

Either (i) I wasn't good enough for the LL.M program so they offered me something different so they could generate more revenue or (ii) they genuinely thought that due to my experience (I have 6 years PQE as a litigator in Australia, already admitted to the New York Bar) they thought that the Master of Advanced Corporation Laws was more appropriate.

I would much appreciate everyone's thoughts.

Cheers.
