TEAM of International Applicants for LL.M - 2008

KVC, did you apply for Georgetown Securities? I took a look at their curriculum. It looked very interesting! I wouldn't mind taking a few of those subjects myself.

Hello people!
I am from Greece and I have applied to 6 LL.M.s: Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Chicago, Berkeley and Michigan.
It is a long way until late March, when things will start to get clear.... I am so stressed about what is going to happen.

To ferarg: There is a group for LLM students admitted to Georgetown (and other univs such as NYU, Columbia, Harvard etc.) at http://www.lawyrs.net/llmguide/25 -- you can get in contact with the members of that group if you join.

Enjoy your holidays as I am sure you all will be accepted to more than one LL.M. At the end the important thing is not which university sends you an offer but to come here and get your LL.M. Any of the top 20 is just fine! Just don't make the mistake of deciding where to go for its name but check it is really what will suit you.

I am pity confused.....Its like this:

I am an Indian and want to pursue my LLM in US. Considering the big amount of money involved...I really wonder whether its worth it. Its like everyone knows that...that even if an International Applicant does an LLM it doesnt guarantee a job in US. In fact it is very difficuly and uncertain to get a job there until and unless you have done ur JD from a US law school.

So what exactly does a US LLM give u in return..besides of corse the exposure etc. I mean I am not denying that all that is very important but we cant deny the fact that somone like me who will be going on a loan...needs to secure the monitory returns too.

(Though know I am begining to feel that I dont want to work in US, but would prefer the east....Australia etc. therefore an LLM for Austrlia or NYU@NUS, which is much more affordable seems to work better for my needs)

I am sure a lot of international applicants like me would have thought about this too.......

Pls advise....

I understand your dilema which is quite common.

first the cost : many of the good schools in USA consider candidates for scholarships that take care of the tuition or least a major part of it;

secondly, the cost is easily recovered when you work as an intern for one year during OPT.

third and most important: it strenghens candidate's skills for whole of life; this one year experience will be useful throughout the career in candidate's home country.

If you have strong net working skills, the entire cost can be recovered during first one or two years of law practice in India after LL.M from USA.

I am repeating a question I had asked earlier to other fora..

I have offers from NYU@NUS with $35K award, and Columbia in the early review without any fin aid. For NUS I need to put together just 16K, but for columbia I need maybe 70K, mostly loan. I have 2 yrs exp, am well placed in India. But if I take up Columbia I need to work in US or Europe to repay the loan. What would be my chances for this? Will I get a decent job at all in US? (Not only money, I am particular about the quality of job/firm)

And, what would be an optimal choice for me? I have apps pending with Harvard, and Cambridge too. I am not applying anywhere else.

Hi indiangril

you deserve to be congratulated for having been accepted at two of the most prestigious law schools, not only in USA, but also in the world. therefore, the choice should simply rest with comparing the cost;

The student body and Faculty at NYU should be lucky in having a bright scholar like you amongst them.

Congratulations again.!

Hello
Is anyone applying to BU Law for their securities/banking program. Has anybody got financial assistance from BU this year or had their interview? If so any tips for the interview? I am keen on securities law. Did my LL.B, from India and have since moved to Canada where I have been working in the securities industry for about 10 years.

Till now I have got an admission in Georgetown and Melbourne Law School. I am confused as to which School to go for (for commercial laws)......so pls advise me on the basis of the following:

1. I am not keen on spending so much for Georgetown(though no doubt its a gr8 school), cause unfortunately for an International Student, on a average scene, GT does not sell in the US legal market. (No disrepect meant for GT or its students....but facts are facts.)

2. I am very interested in working in Australia or Asia (Singapore etc.) and I feel that MLS would sell pity in this part of the world.

3. I agree that the quality of admission in US is the best, but I have to keep in mind the cost factor, since I will be going on a loan. (If I got through CLS then I would have without any hesitation gone to US, but unfortunatley that did not happen)

4. I amn still awaiting decisions for NYU, NYU@NUS and UPENN. If I get through any of them, then I guess I might have more options. (though as per my research andf knowledge even NYU does not work for an International Student in the US firms). I dunnow much abt UPENN though....

So given the above, please advise me, what works best for me....Till now I have more or less made up mind on MLS....

By the ways I have about 3 yrs of work ex in a top law firm of India.

All advise will be extremely helpful.

Thanks

FOR SONALI SHARMA

Hi Sonali

All the law schools listed in the list of usnews.com and approved by ABA are good schools;

The LL.M program is costly if one has to pay all the tuition and expenses; therefore, you should make an effort to negotiate for a good scholarship.

Some scholarship, at least partial tuition fee waiver, is available, in almost all the top 60 tier I law schools. you may more particularly look at : Vanderbilt, WUSL, UMN, AU-WCL, TULANE, SMU, CWRU, CARDOZO, TEMPLE, UCON, KENT,

The list is long and one need to search and scan the information available on website of each school;

better you start applying one by one; making a list as per deadline of the schools. it is already quite late; you may have to be really smart to be in time.
