A Comprehensive Approach

A traditional legal education is no longer sufficient to equip international lawyers with the tools they need to succeed in the complex field of international law. International lawyers need a broader contextual understanding, not only of the law but also of the societies and institutions in which international law is made, interpreted, and applied.

The International Law LL.M. program at The Fletcher School is uniquely situated to prepare attorneys for work in the evolving field of international law. Our integrative approach to legal education includes a core of international law courses, which are complemented by courses in diplomacy, political science, economics, and international business, depending on each student's interests.

An Individualized Program

Our small, individualized program, which is housed within the larger Fletcher School, means that students have the support and flexibility to tailor a program that matches their academic interests and career goals. Every student in the Fletcher LL.M. has a faculty mentor, who is available for guidance on career paths and selecting classes, and often serves as a thesis advisor. Our students find that attending a school focused on the intersection of law and diplomacy lends a unique perspective to their training in international law.

An Engaged Community

At Fletcher we pride ourselves on our strong sense of community. The LL.M. program meets as a group regularly for our High Table discussion series, which features leaders in the field of international law, as well as for informal group lunches. One of the highlights of the year is the second semester Capstone Colloquium retreat. For three days LL.M. students, faculty, and invited experts in international law come together for the presentation of students' thesis research and to discuss a chosen theme in international law.

Tufts University was founded in 1852. A private research university, Tufts has three campuses in the Boston area, and one in the French Alps. The Fletcher School

The Fletcher School at Tufts University, founded in 1933, is the oldest graduate-only school of international affairs in the United States. The School's mission is to offer a broad professional education in international affairs to students committed to maintaining the stability and prosperity of a complex, challenging and increasingly global society. The Fletcher School is distinctive for its collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach. Three divisions of classes are offered at The Fletcher School: "International Law and Organizations," "Diplomacy, History and Politics," and "Economics and International Business." Students from all programs are encouraged to take classes outside of their area of concentration, and students find that they greatly benefit from exposure to peers with varied interests and professional backgrounds.

The Fletcher School has a study body of over 600 students. About half of Fletcher's students are international students, hailing from more than 40 countries around the world. Fletcher alumni are presently living and working in more than 130 countries. Fletcher's flexible curriculum, distinguished faculty, and accomplished community of students and alumni provide a thorough preparation to meet global challenges that transcend borders, disciplines, and sectors.

Class in Public International Law

Generation of new knowledge in the field of international affairs is an ongoing focus at The Fletcher School's LL.M. in International Law. Students are taught by a distinguished group of international law faculty, who are leaders in their respective fields. Our professors offer the benefit of extensive practice experience in the area of international law, and many continue to practice. Our faculty members bring what they have learned at the United Nations, international arbitral tribunals, the War Crime Tribunals in Rwanda and Yugoslavia, leading law firms such as Wilmer Hale and K+L Gates, the United States Air Force, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the OECD, and the European Commission of Human Rights to the Fletcher classroom.

2016 graduates

A law degree is required to apply for the program. Applicants are selected on the basis of law school and undergraduate grades, legal and other professional experience, exam scores, TOEFL scores (where applicable), recommendations, and a writing sample. Fluency in English is required.

The Fletcher School's location provides the best of both worlds with the friendliness and tranquility of a classic college town and the urban influence of nearby Boston. From international law firms, Fidelity Investments, Raytheon and Oxfam America to over 35 consular offices, Boston offers a wealth of professional opportunities. Many of the world's leading private, public, and nonprofit organizations maintain their headquarters in Boston, providing Fletcher students with valuable resources to find internships and employment and to establish networks of professional contacts.

In Boston, you will discover one of America's most cultural, historic, stimulating, and livable cities. Recreational activities are abundant and range from historical trails, museums, shopping, sports, theater and restaurants. Less than two hours away are the beaches of Cape Cod, the trails of New Hampshire and Vermont, and the historic mansions of Newport, Rhode Island.

Student organizations are an integral part of The Fletcher School. They serve as a focal point and catalyst for many of the School's activities.
