International Law LL.M. - Fletcher School, USA or Graduate Institute, Geneva

Tons5

Hello people,
I've read discussions here for many years and this is the first time I am posting one. Please help me in choosing a LL.M. programme between the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston, USA and the Graduate Institute in Geneva, Switzerland.

I am an Indian lawyer. I am particularly interested in international human rights and environmental law. The costs after including scholarships is coming out to be the same and I have to make a qualitative decision. Fletcher allows me to shape my own curriculum and take courses in Diplomacy and policy as well, including some credits at Harvard! The Graduate Institute offers a very structured programme with either specialization in human rights or environment. The location of Geneva is tremendous and offers great opportunities. My visa will allow me to stay for six months more in Switzerland after the LL.M, as compared to one year in USA.

Both of these are my top choices and I understand this is a great problem to be in. I am slightly looking in favour of Fletcher as I really want to experience US culture and that Fletcher seems to give individual attention to its students.

Help me please!

Hello! I know this is an old post (this is also my first post on here after following discussions for some time), but I am in this exact position and I have to make a decision by the end of March. I am wondering what school/program did you end up going with and what was your experience like? Both seem like great schools, and I think my preference is Geneva, but I am not sure. I would love to hear what you decided and how it turned out. Thank you!

Hi, I'm in a similar position. I was wondering if someone could please answer this question or give a comparative view of these two. My areas of interest are Public International Law, International Humanitarian Law and International Criminal Law and I want to work at an international organization to international court after graduation.

I would recommend you to do an LLM at Fletcher and then a PhD at Graduate Institute — this would be a perfect combination, I believe.

Hi, Thank you for your response! Sounds like the best of both worlds :D
However, I don't exactly intend to do a PhD, at least for 2-3 years after my LLM, hence I want to choose the LLM carefully that gives me the best vantage point for a career in IL. In that case, would you still suggest Tufts LLM over Geneva, and if you could please share why? Thank you!
