Question: I have been admitted and haven't been offered a scholarship. If I decide to decline my admission now, and trying again next year (19-20), how does it affect my chances on being admitted next time? Do they increase or decrease? Also, would it be more likely to get a scholarship? I haven't applied to other universities and I might decide to try NYU again next year if I don't get a scholarship until enrollment deadline
I can only tell you from my personal experience. I was admitted in 2014 while I was still in law school. I had to decline the offer because I was given no scholarship. I had only applied to NYU so I didnt go anywhere else. 3 years (and a lot of work experience) later I applied again -- this time I secured admission and the dean's scholarship. But in these 3 years the cost of living in NYC has increased and so has the tuition fee. I have also spent the last 3 years fully immersed in human rights work which leaves me with very little savings. So I will have to decline the offer and the scholarship (this time) again. Anyhow I don't think it will reduce your chances in any which way just because you refused the offer once, however to get scholarship you may have to show some growth in your work profile...also bear in mind that next year will have a different pool of applicants with diverse resume.. so you never know.
I could wait for another 3 years and maybe... third time is a charm? But I did what @Kavovic9 rightly suggested ... applied to other places as well and got equally promising offers that I would love to pursue.
So if you want NYU badly I would say you need to show growth in your work profile as its a merit based scholarship.
