NYU admitted students - International Tax LLM 2006

ivan2006

Hi everybody, how many of you admitted to the International Tax LLM at NYU will accept the university´s offer? I will do it for sure!

I'm in too (from Mexico). Just to confirm, the Int. Tax. LLM at NYU is better ranked than Harvard's ITP LLM?? Any comment on this regard??

yes...the NYU LL.M. is indeed ranked better than Harvard. I have applied for Harvard as well...and assuming that I get Harvard :) I will anyday take NYU over it.

Hi, I guess HLS does not offer anymore the joint degree ITP/LLM, but the LLM in Taxation or the ITProgram. In any case, I have already asked myself the same question (and made some inquiries among people I know who studied in both universities - including one HLS ITP alumnus) and I was able to conclude the following:

1) Rankings: in terms of taxes it is often said that NYU is undisputably #1 (try to check the discussion forum at www.taxtalent.com). Harvard is not among the top 3 (I don´t remember whether it was 4th or 5th).
2) Focus of the program: I guess the ITP at HLS is more academic-focused (many visiting scholars, public servants) and strong in tax policy matters. However, if you want to work for a law firm, I guess NYU is a much better option, as far as it provides for great activities and networking (e.g. lunches with experts, tillinghast lecture, international business transaction course). Ah, and by the way, if you already work as an int´l tax advisor, the names of Professors Kees van Raad and Michael Lang will sound to you. They´re the directors of the Int´l tax LLMs at Leiden and Vienna (the best in Europe) and they were visting professors at NYU. Conclusion: if those guys go to NYU instead of HLS, perhaps it means that the ITP at NYU is doing better than Harvard´s, since the best foreign professors are going there.
3) Marketability - when it comes to taxes, everybody (and I talked to some people who already work for NY Law Firms) ackowledges NYU´s excellence. So I guess if you apply for a job position in the US, maybe an LLM in Int´l tax from NYU will be seen as an advantage. On the other hand, Harvard has a powerful brand - but we´re not JDs, and I don´t know to which extent we could take advantage from this networking.
4) My particular case: a) I´d continue to work as a tax advisor after the LLM; b) I´d like to sit for the bar in NY State; c) I´d like to work for some time in NY after the LLM. For me, NYU is the best option - although I believe that nobody that goes to HLS regret it. You know, it´s just a matter of analyzing pros and cons and your priorities.

Regards,
Ivan

Re: International Tax
I applied (and was admitted) to the LLM in Taxation. I guess it is a different program than the International Tax, right?
Although I am an international student I heard that the Int. Program is based for Int. students and that the Tax is for U.S. students but the Int. students can still apply. The admission email didn't say to which program I was admitted so my guess is that you are admitted to the program you applied to..
If this is so than I will attend the Tax class as opposed to the Int. Tax class.

Hi, marody - you´re right, the General Tax LLM is a different program, although many of its required courses are required for Int´l LLMs as well. In other words, it means that we´ll probably meet each other in the classroom! By the way, I have a very good friend of mine (also Spanish) who is currently pursuing the LLM in Taxation and she told me that since its curriculum is mainly focused in US taxation, first days are kinda hard... If you want to, I can put you in touch with her and she may tell you something about the course.

Hi, and thanks for your help.
I would love to speak to someone who studies there. Thanks.
Why did you apply for the Int. and not the regular tax?
and one last question.. - If I was admitted (they didn't say to which program) - can they admit me to the Int. instead of the regular which is what I want - or is it guaranteed that I was admitted to what I applied for?

Hi, don´t worry about the admission - if your letter states you were admitted to the tax LLM, it is the general tax program. My reasons for applying for the ITP: a) flexibility of the curriculum (at the general tax llm you´re required to take more courses on US tax law, and even though I´m very interested in it, I wanted to take other courses on Int´l tax that were more appealing to me); b) size - although we´ll attend to classes with JDs and Tax LLMs, the ITP is a smaller (up to 25 students) program. I have the feeling it´s easier to make better acquaintances if you´re part of a more "exclusive" program. c) special events of the ITP LLM: for instance, the weekly lunches with int´l tax experts (great networking).
Would you mind to say something more about yourself (e.g. where are you from, credentials)? I´ll try to put you in touch with this friend of mine and I´d like to tell her more about you. Send me a personal message if you prefer.
Cheers,
Ivan

Hi guys, it is me again, I had a wonderful weekend after receiving my package from NYU, unfortunately I did not receive any scholarship, so I am looking for external financing sources. Do you know how many students are commonly admitted to the ITP LLM at NYU??? I need to know this information in order to request some loans in my country. Thanks in advance.

hello everyone...got my package from NYU today. no scholarship here either.

i was going through the website for the tax program at NYU and there appear to be a couple of scholarships exclusively for students pursuing tax at NYU. they are mentioned at

http://www.law.nyu.edu/programs/tax/acprograms/intl/financial.html

any idea about how to apply for them or does NYU automatically consider one for them?

As I understood from the admitted students CD that was in the UPS we are considered automatically for those and will be notified in May. I am not sure but I think that this is what it said.

Hi everybody!

Marody, I´ve seen your personal message - I´ll get back to you asap.
Adm2006 - I have a pdf copy of the materials enclosed with the letter - a brochure for admitted students, letter of admissions, etc. If you want to have an idea of what you´ll find in your package (except for the scholarship, which I hope you´ll be awarded), I can send them to you via e-mail. Btw, where are you from?
Rendezvous - I know that there are a couple of scholarships (David Wallace and TaxLaw review) available for ITP´s. Perhaps you could send an e-mail both to Prof. David Rosenbloom and to the office of admissions asking for that and for assistantships (it could at least reduce the financial burden of the LLM)...
Cheers

Sorry adm, I had forgot who you were... Finally UPS arrived in dear old Moscow... Do you remember that movie starring Tom Hanks, Cast away? The movie started in Moscow and he worked for FedEx... Needless to say that they were probably more efficient in the movies than in real life... How nervous are you now, by the way?

Yep, I remember this movie, you're absolutely right, Ivan 2006... :) But I should say that NYU sent my UPS package only on the 16 of March!....
I'm not at all nervous. :) But the only thing I want now is to escape from work and take the package in my hands! :) I like receiving mails, especially good ones. :)))
