Where did you study in the UK, JDI? I am also a UK grad.
NYU

Given that I did not receive a scholarship, I think I'm going to consider CLS instead (if I get in).

JDI: I'm waiting to hear back from both CLS and Cambridge. Are you in this boat as well?
Friends and professors are confident that I will be admitted, but I'm never so confident. Having said that if you're still waiting on CLS (with those credentials), it gives some peace of mind. Particularly, Cambridge which I'm sure takes its time with admissions, without a fixed date for decisions.

Has any one that applied for a Part Time LLM been admitted?
Posted Mar 17, 2006 16:41
I'm sure you'll get into Cambridge. I got in last year but deferred because I decided I wanted to work in in America where a US LLM is far more beneficial.
I predict you'll get a dean's scholarship or more from NYU. Still no word from CLS but that's my first choice now. Would you go to CLS over Cambridge and NYU?
Where in Canada did you go to law school?

JDI:
That would be a tough decision - any of those are fantastic; I would probably favour Columbia, but I'm still not sure if I'd prefer to study in NYC for a year over England. Univ of London has a great reputation, I cannot see you not being admitted to Columbia. My big hope was an associateship, as I have already taught legal research and writing to students; ah, but to no avail.
Quick question - did you have to sign for your NYU UPS package when it arrived? Sorry to bother on this, but I'd like to get that package sooner than later.
Also, that was certainly a good idea about working in the U.S. for some time, that cannot hurt. I've been working in Toronto, and have had the opportunity to work on some high profile cases, like the Same Sex Marriage Reference to the SCC. I'm still considering deferring for one year for further experience; but, of course, I need to be admitted first!
Do you know if deferral at NYU is possible?

Don't know if deferral is possible at NYU. I'm assuming it is -you could call the admissions department to confirm.
My girlfriend received the package in England and did not sign for it. I think the neighbour downstairs took it in because she was at work all day. If you are not there they usually leave a card with a number to call to arrange a suitable delivery time and date.
Funny, I'm in Toronto right now visiting family. I worked for a labour law firm in Toronto two summers ago.

rippy:
Thanks a lot, man. That's helpful. I saw a speeding UPS van heading up my street yesterday morning, and wondered if I had (again) missed the delivery.

Cheers Sofi for your thoughts. I am quite sure you'll get in from the waitlist. Many people turn down NYU for other programs and for financial reasons. Your credentials are very good so I wouldn't worry.

Hi, is there anything like a waiting list for any scholarship?
There might be people who've got NYU scholarships (in whatever amount) and decide to turn down the admission offer altogether. Will those scholarships then be handed down to other admitted students?
Any thought on this?

Don't think there's a waiting list for scholarships. Is anyone planning on doing the NY bar exam this July?
Posted Mar 17, 2006 18:16
Hi, JDI. Thanks for the quick reply.
Are you from a common law country? If not, my understanding that you need to take at least two "US basic law subjects" (which can be covered in the LLM course) to be eligible for sitting for the NY bar exam.
But anyway, I am thinking about signing up for a review course in advance, or at least buy the books first. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks.

Hi LY,
I am already eligible to write the NY bar exam. I applied last summer and 3 months later they sent me a letter allowing me to take the Bar. I am from a common law country (England) so all I needed was a 3 year LLB.
I'm thinking of doing the BARBRi course, it's expensive, but most people pass with it. I'm checking out Celebration Bar review as well. Not sure who to go with.
Funny thing is, I may not even want to practice law in the classic sense, but I hear having a professional designation can be just as important as having an academic one (LLM).

Thanks, JDI. You are right about the professional designation. Many in-house jobs require bar qualifications. I don't see much sense in that, but that's how it is.
Good luck to you at the course and the exam. I'll have to wait till I have taken the 2 subjects at NYU. I do have a degree from England but that was an LLM which I don't think counts for bar exam eligibility.

Is scholarship the same as financial aid?
I've applied for the latter and I'm not sure whether no mention of scholarship in admission decision means no financial aid beind granted. Or maybe the decision is pending?
best regards,
K.

JDI:
Got my package friday. No Global Hauser scholarship.
I'm not entirely surprised, however. My entire application was oriented towards the Public Service Law LLM and the Global Public Service Law Scholarship, but after I applied (way back in December) I learned in mid January that funding for the Global Public Service LLM had dried up, and that those who had already applied could (a) get their fee back or (b) ask to be considered for one of the other programs. I selected the latte (b), but I have to say I would have put together different references / materials had I known earlier that Public Service LLM would not be offered 2006-2007.
