Still don't know - I'll either take it now or defer for one year, but not decline. I'll make up my mind definitely by the end of the next week.

Do you know abot the other two people from Eastern Europe whether they'll take it or they'll defer it? Are the other two people from the same country like you? Sorry for the inquiry I am trying to figure out the quota representation if it's per country or per region. Thanks.

I do not know what the other two are going to do - I just merely know that they are accepted, but nothing more. One person is from the same, and the other one from another country.

Last year for example seven people from six Eastern European countries were admitted to HLS (by "Eastern Europe" I mean all transition economies, i.e. Central Europe, Balkan and Baltic states + CIS countries including Russia). I haven't got however the slightest idea how that "Eastern Europe" is viewed from the US east coast, i.e. how they apply their quotas to the regions or countries. One surely has to meet some minimum standards, but it might still be easier to get accepted as compared to old EU member states (even because you are compared in the first line with your countrymen and the number of applicants is smaller). I would personally put together the applicants from the CIS countries to one basket, and applicants from new EU member states to another, but this is only my opinion.

Hey, thanks for the replies. I am trying to decide myself on what to do since the waitlist decision is supposed to be given put in mid-May and they have suggested since I am from East, my chances to be written off the list depend on the number of people from the region who accept the offer but they wouldn't say how many there are or how many WE are on the waitlist ....it's tough!

HLS has set the deadline for accepting the offer on May 1st.

I would say that the number of accepted students is roughly the same as in the last year, maybe +/- one/two persons. People might want to defer because of various reasons (finances + time for fundrising, PhD pending, great job/internship opportunity etc.) so there is always some chance that there will be an additional slot open, but of course you never know.

Hi bostonians07 - actually I am in the midst of the same dilemma you are facing... The geographical quota system you refer to - in terms of seats becoming available only from amongst the set of seats reserved for applicants from a particular country - is this the official version from HLS in their response to you or is this based on what you have heard from ppl generally? Thanx

You know I tried to get an official version but Harvard won't say much. They told me the people on the wait list are not ranked, and that was it! I read though th eblogs of other people and I put it all together, since the admission is based on a quota system it would make sense to apply that rule to the waitlisted people. I am conflicted since this is the only program I applied for and I feel I am in the dark here with no response on th eother end. I heard about people defering it and/or taking upon other schools' offer and still no change in my status. So I fugured it must be a quota thing. Bober said he is thinking about whether defering or taking it and since he's from east like me I wonder if that would change my status whether he'd defer for next year. Harvard won't say how many people are waitlisted...It is annoying and I feel there's nothing I can do about it: I either wait and tke huge risks or apply to a different program. :-(

You know, I too have read th eposts from previous years when people said they knew people recalled from the waitlist at HLS, however none of the "bloggers" were in those cases. I think there are a LOT of people who do not know about this message list and many of them may be on the waitlist like us or are the success cases we would love so much to hear about. Bottom line is that even if there were people on this list waitlisted chances to come back to this little "confession room" after being admitted are remote. I know i would be more focused on how to get the money to finance my studies than sharing my happiness.

You can be optimistic or you can be realistic. I for one will not take any chances esp. since East Europe is highly represented at HLS and it's v unlikely that someone from there will clear a place for me to grab around early June.

Hi Bostonians!
I was in the wait-list as well (western Europe), but had a super tight deadline and had to accept another offer! A real pity... Good luck to you for all the poor waitlisted who had to give it up!!!Please keep us posted on how it ends.

I just learnt that a final decision for the waitlisted people is "sometime after June 1st" though the original deadline was May 15th...it becomes quite frustrating and I remember reading posts of people who learnt about their admission in early July !!!!!!!! Anybody from the waitlist any other news? I'd appreciate.

Good luck Bostonians! Admittedly HLS is not playing fair with you...do you have a back-up option, anyway?

well, the thing is that I have to get out of US in two weeks from now and I need a firm answer to make sure that I can come back or not to US (due to visa issues for international students)....I am hanging on a very thin thread...
