Nice one.
Even though I am not an applicant to US universities, the feelings couldn't be more common.

I received the application complete e-mail today
Posted Jan 25, 2009 03:55
just daunted on me that the acceptance rate is +/- 10% so many of us on here who are anxiously waiting for a result would be disappointed :(
Posted Jan 25, 2009 04:03
it depends on how many people applied in your country, how many slots that harvard allocates to your country. if harv gives your country 10 slots and only 5 people apply, you're sure to get in. :) my hope is that this year, all applicants from my country don't have a first law degree.
Posted Jan 25, 2009 04:20
slots in terms of country of origin/citizenship? Or country of law school?
Posted Jan 25, 2009 04:25
shld be country of citizenship.

I am not so sure about "slots" in the HLS admission process. I think they choose the best prospective students.
Posted Jan 25, 2009 04:32
i'm very sure about slots in the HLS admissions process. they allocate a certain number of seats in each class to each country. the number of seats allocated are based on the position of that country in the world economy and such. from what i understand, japan has 10 slots, singapore 5 slots, philippines 3 slots, china 12 slots, etc.
Posted Jan 25, 2009 04:38
Dear michaelcorleone, then just suppose that HLS has previously assigned 3 slots to Singapur (e.g), there are three applicants and one of them has failed courses and he is at the bottom of his class.
Do you think that HLS will give him a seat in the LLM class?

Dear jllink, the quota system (which has been extensively discussed previously -- http://www.llm-guide.com/board/25668/2) is not a strict rule, but is a rule of thumb. harvard will of course not confine itself to offering 3 slots to a country that has been receiving 3 slots for the previous years if, say, that particular year, the applicant pool from that country is composed of only high school grads exclusively.

That´s what I mean. Because I strongly disagree with your sentence: "f harv gives your country 10 slots and only 5 people apply, you're sure to get in..."
It is good to clarify that. Thanks.

of course, this is pure speculation. who knows if harvard really wants 10 people from gregor's country every year?
Posted Jan 25, 2009 05:44
lol don't get into a fight into this!
i think michael is right - there is a slot system - but each person offered from each country will have to meet a certain standard before they are offered a place. Otherwise, they would rather offer the slot to someone else from another country!

anyway jllink in your sentence "I am not so sure about "slots" in the HLS admission process. I think they choose the best prospective students." i disagree with it also because you mean that there is no such thing as the quota/slot system, and that all candidates are measured against all other candidates, irrespective of the country of origin.

both of you need to stop fighting!!!!!
lol. both of you are somewhat right.
