Fancy LLM for International Arbitrator/Litigator

mybigboss

Hello guys,

Could someone please share your thoughts or experience on selecting the best LLM program in the USA for those interested in international arbitration or international litigation career? I mean a career as an arbitration counsel or arbitrator, spending 2 years in a oil rig dispute or a concession expropriation proceeding then have a client dinner in Paris before flying off to Stockholm or Geneva, or something of similar fanciful advent.

Career kick off tips would be most welcomed (i.e. what to do and where to apply for jobs after LLM etc) : ) !!

I would advise that you apply to complete an LLM focused on International Law. Generally most of the top US Law Schools (Columbia, Berk, Gt, NYU, HLS etc) include courses in International Dispute Resoution (ICSID/UNCITRAL etc) in their International Law syllabus.
There are specialist US International DR courses out there - but mostly offered by less high-profile Law Schools. I work in the Int Arb department of a major Firm and, of those colleagues who chose to complete a specialist graduate course, all chose Int Law over Int Arb.
Hope this helps.
(PS Don't mean to burst your bubble but client dinners before heading off to Stockholm etc are pretty rare - late nights followed by numerous cups of coffee far more common!)

As far as I am concerned, I am currently living in France where I am having the Bar exam. Because of the difficulties in the French legal market, I planned to come back in the U.S. and attend the Summer International Arbitration Program of AU, where I had my LL.M. four years ago.

Do you think that attending such a program will allow me to apply and find a job in the U.S., i.e. in NY or DC, knowing that I also speak French and Spanish in addition to English and that I will have a degree in France relating to International Litigation and Arbitration Law?

In advance, thanks a lot for your answer.
