Any thoughts?

To clarify, the last sentence in my previous post was my own thought. I guess it might be possible that some decisions have already been made (a "hard" acceptance or rejection) and will be communicated to the applicants soon but if you hear nothing from Chicago, it may simply mean that they have not got the chance to review your application yet.

I agree with LLM2008. Given the fact that Chicago has reviewed less than half of the applications, the only admissions or rejections that could be announced right now would concern either really "strong" applicants (having applications so remarkable, that the committee doesn't feel the need to wait and see the credentials of the other 400 applicants in order to compare) or really "weak" applicants (having applications that will obviously won't survive the harsh competition). So, I guess that "normal" applicants, who are not super-confident about their credentials (i.e. like me) should relax and wait for a while until they hear sth.
(LLM2008's post actually made me stop hoping that I might get my first answer earlier than late March - at least today I was informed that I received a Fulbright grant... thats sth I guess).

L&E-pil, how did you get this grant? Here they offer only to doctoral studies.

In Greece Fulbright grants are available only for master studies and not for doctoral. I submitted an application and was interviewed by a committee. The grant covers only a part of the 60K that one I'll need next year in the US, but it's better than nothing,

I doubt I'm adding anything that everyone doesn't already know, but just in case there are still people who haven't received their application complete email, I received this email today (2/14/8): Note that I applied at the last minute.

"We received all of the necessary documents, and your application file is complete. Your file has been submitted to the Graduate Studies Committee for evaluation. Please note that all applications were stamped with their date of postal arrival, so though you are receiving this notice after January 15, this is merely due to a lag time in processing during this busy season.
The Committee will make three types of decisions: admission, deny, and standby group (waiting list). It is our policy to send you these decisions via email as soon as they are made."

Good luck everyone - don't let the waiting make you crazy!

Just a reminder that this is what the U. Chicago website ( http://www.law.uchicago.edu/prospective/llm-apply.html ) has to say:

Although the application deadline is January 15, candidates are urged to submit their applications as soon as possible since applications are considered in the order in which they are completed. Our experience has been that the most promising candidates generally apply before the end of December. Any applications received after January 15 will be considered on a space-available basis only. Consideration of completed applications will begin in late November, and most candidates will receive a final decision by mid-April, when a standby group will be created.

So, that said, if they have reviewed ~300 apps by now, it wouldn't be surprising to see a first batch of yea's or nays around now, since it was around this time last year they started coming out (no?)

I also don't bother checking my e-mail incessantly b/c I figure it will be some kind of systematic e-mailing that comes at close to some logical hour like, 9 am CST, 5pm CST, 7 pm CST or midnight CST. I've seen electronic systems and admin office policies at a couple of uni's that do that .

I think no one doubts that some decisions are already made. This is evident due to the fact that:
1)Rej (a doctoral student at Chicago) has told us so,
2)Chicago's website says that evaluation of applications begins in late November
3)last year the first people to be notified received their offers in late January, which shows how and when things proceed at Chicago.
What is quite uncertain right now, is how many decisions have already been made and when will they be announced.
If they have received so many applications this year, it seems logical to me that they will proceed slower with the admission decisions. The Committee will wait to see as many applications as possible before they decide whether an applicant should be offered admission or not (except in the case where there is a candidate with such a "remarkable" application that the Committee doesn't feel the need to wait until it sees other applications to compare). Thus, I guess the reason that they haven't communicated a first bunch of decisions yet is because they have not reached the "adequate" number of decisions that will allow them to release the first e-mails.
Just my way of viewing things of course....

I wrote to Chicago last night, chasing them as to when they could send out the decisions and got the response as follows,

Hello,

"Thank you for your patience. Decisions will be sent out over the next few weeks. Decisions come in three categories: admit, hold, and deny. More information will be provided once decisions have been emailed."

I guess "few" would in this case mean 3-4 weeks from now. Probably, we won't hear from them in February. I presume that 1-15 March is a realistic period to start checking our inbox again.
Thank you magicandrew for your initiative to send this e-mail and share their answer with us. At least now, we know we can't wait for sth in the immediate future.
