I was checking out the HLS community at Orkut and a read the following from a current LLM student from HLS:
"9/5/2005 1:41 PM
Professor M. Ploutz, told me that is not possible to accept people from Brazil this year. "
"1/15/2006 11:15 AM
Professor Michel Plutz, is the Head of Admission Department. Sorry, but there is no chance this year, our class is really full. Study more. Maybe next year."
Can you believe that? I am shocked and frustrated. I spent my time and money for nothing. And I also did not apply for NYU because I decided to apply for HLS LLM program, and both had the same deadline.
This is crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!

That must be a joke. The Head of Admission Department would never say that and what does it mean "out class is really full"? Don't believe everything that you read.

The person who said that is a current brazilian student. Why would he lie? Moreover I know that it is usually very important to US schools to have diversity, so if they have been having too many brazilians in their classes, i believe that this head of department would be able to said that to a student in a informal conversation.
I did not hear of any brazilian accepted this year. Have you?
If I do, I will rest my case.
Thanks

Harvard takes appr 250 LLMs every year and according to a friend of mine 2-5 Brazilians. I cannot believe they would make an institutional decision of "not accepting any Brazilians this year", specially when the Brazilian economy is booming. I would be even more surprised that they would turn down an outstanding candidate just b/c pf his home country... it does not make sense. My question is what "we are really full" means? If the LLM program is just for one year how can they be full for the 06-07 LLM? Maybe Brazil is a small country and you know all the candidates that are applying but my guess is that by June you will find out that someone from Brazil was accepted. Good Luck!

This has actually made me laugh!

OK, that's it!
I'm portuguese and for obvious reasons would love to meet some brazilian peers at Harvard. But Paul is right: there is certainly no such standard of admission as "not being a brazilian". It might be possible that nationality works as a standard of decision in borderline cases, but not as a general rule. That is not true, period! I also believe that some brazilian was most likely admitted to HLS...
And Paul ...You're right in almost everything but you know... Brazil is really, really big! Where do you como from? Russia or something...
Just kidding :-)

It is true that we didn't hear in all the posts in this site about any brazilian being accepted, but I can't believe that just because of this there is none.
Just one correction Paul, Harvard receives 150 LLM students per year and not 250. So our chances are really small.
If someone hears about any accepted brazilian, please share the information with us. I am brazilian and was not accepted, but I know every year we are very well represented at HLS.
By the way, have some of you already received the rejection letter? Or maybe HLS won't spend at least a little bit of the money they collected from us with mail fees.
After one year working on this application process and spending money with TOEFL, LSAC and certified translations, I believe that I deserve some respect from this school.

I just wanted to make sure you all understand my point. I am not stating a fact that I believe to be true (i.e, HLS decided to discriminate against Brazilians this year). I just came across some information that I believe should be considered and wanted to hear your comments. I currently do not have a position on this and truly believe it to be very unlikely. However, "convenhamos", it is intriguing...

Sorry for my sarcasm!!! I know Brazil quite well. I have been to Sao Paulo a couple of times to work...I love the "churascarias"...best, Paul

I am also Braziian and I known a lot of candidates who applied to HLS this year and, like me, were rejected. Until I hear that someone from Brazil has been admitted I believe that all Brazilians were rejected this year. Best regards,

Well, sorry to say that but maybe the Br candidates this year were not so good.
I am just saying that I don't believe the Dean of Admissions would say beforehand that "this year we are not accepting any Brazilians, regardless of their credentials..."

This would be quite a coincidence. Because the guy posted the message at Orkut in September of last year. Go figure....
