best choice for LLM in IP from USA

hi

i have done my engineering in electronics and telecommunication and after that i will complete my LLB with specialization in IPR from IIT in april 2009.
Can anyone kindly advice me on the universities which have LLM in IP?
Which is the best university which provides LLM in IP?
Is doing LLM in IP from harvard or yale worth it because they are not known for IP education?
which is the best option from GWU,franklin pierce, harvard, yale and stanford in LLM in IP?
also kindly let me know abt the job scenario after doing this course from any of these universities.

do a search on this board or google for the us news world & report rankings for IP schools. i think you hit most of the big ones except for Houston and Berkeley.

hi,
FPLC, GWU,carlifornia barkley, stanfford are top four univ for LLM-IP. I already got an admission in FPLC and looking forward to join it this fall.Job, no one can assure you about it, but if you are talented you will get it, however be the situation, as you may be aware of that IP is a growing field.

hi,

thanks for your reply. actually i went through the board and most of the people were of the opinion that jobs are not available after doing llm from US particularily if u want to work in US and doesnt make much difference in india. so what is ur opinion about this. Moreover if u get a job that will be paralegal which is not worth doing after LLM.

hi,
you may be right that jobs are not available and we have to do some paralegale work but if you wish to be in US and want to work there you have to do this becouse our basic law is quit different, but when it's come to IPR it's generalley based on various treaties of WTO and therefore similarity between US and INDIAN IP law is evident. Even in medical fields Doctor's who goes for MS in US has to start with paramedical work's. And it's also depend upon which state you select for your LLM, wheather that state allow foreign lawyers to sit for bar exam or not.

Hi, I'm a domestic attorney who is perpetually contemplating an LLM. I've most recently been admitted to GWU for IP.

I just wanted to pop in to this thread to give a little domestic-side point of view on the market. The legal market here (especially on the east coast between DC and NY) is quite competitive right now. Many firms are not hiring, and some have even done what has seemed unthinkable--laying off attorneys.

As for the paralegaling, this is true even for the domestic attorneys here in DC and NY. I've met many attorneys who are forced to work as paralegals (even after passing bar exams) because of the market. One I particularly remember had both her JD and LLM in IP. So don't think that the people stuck taking paralegal jobs are doing so just to get rounded out in domestic law for a while, per the medical analogy. It's more just a reflection of the market at the moment. Whether I attend GWU is based in large part on my own predictions of the market over here, and I will be barred in NY, DC MD, and the USPTO.

I don't say this to scare anyone away; I am always for the idea of education, but I wanted to give a little perspective from the inside, so to speak.

SO best of luck to all who are still waiting to hear, and to those who have already decided to take the plunge, despair not! Be creative and you will definitely find something, or who knows, maybe you'll be recruited right from your program!

Cheers!
