How much will it cost for me and my girlfriend to live in Berkeley. Would we be better off living in Oakland or somewhere else. Also, if I live in Berkeley, is a car necessary?

Hi,
I did my undergraduate at Berkeley. Berkeley is a really cool, funky, liberal town. It is not too expensive to find a decent apartment in Berkeley. If you spend some time looking, you might be able to find a one bedroom for as low as $800. I lived in what's called the "north side" and I loved it. If you live in Berkeley, you don't need a car. You can take BART everywhere. Oakland is also a good place to live, but you may have to commute. Take BART - it's very convenient and gets you to many places in the bay area.
