Hello,
I just got an email of admittance from Boalt Hall, Berkeley, however, they want me to fill out a form of acceptance within 2 weeks for confirming a place!!!! They said if I cannot accept in 2 weeks, I can request to be placed in their waiting list , in which case they cannot guarantee me a place!
What can I do now? I still waiting from Stanford and
Harvard???
Help friends!

if I were you I will fill out their form even pay the deposit to secure the place, what's 200 or 500$ when you have to pay 32000$ secure the place guy, If you're admitted at HLS or stanford no pb you only loss 500$...... and I am sure that Boalt won't bring an action against you for that
Congrat's ,also ask yourself if an llm at Boalt really worth it if you want to practice and if you are sure to be admitted in HLS or STANFORD

Thanksfor your message! I am thinking on similar lines, to pay and secure the place. I am yet to get the postal letter and form of acceptance, which will have the details about the fee to be paid etc...
Also, I do want to get into practice, so thats another issue, since Boalt concentrates more on research and teaching.
I would appreciate thoughts from other people on the forum as well...

ritullm,
Congrats on your acceptance to Boalt Hall! The admission is great news considering that berkeley is ranked #1 in IP Law and 13 overall (US News). From your choice of schools I guess you are pursuing an IP focused LLM (I am, and applied to the same schools + GWU-admitted-, NYU & Columbia). Nevertheless, it is a bummer that you must confirm a place within 2 weeks. The thing I would consider is: is it two weeks after the e-mail or 2 weeks after the confirmation letter. If it is two weeks after the confirmation letter, I guess you still have time. Also, I agee with mars, you might as well confirm if sending the acceptance form does not require a considerable down-payment. Call the school to discuss deadlines before making any decision. Apparently, Harvard and Stanford are priority choices for you, and if payment for securing a place in Berkeley is not that relevant I guess that I would much rather loose that amount than risk not being accepted in any of the other two unis and loosing my place in Boalt Hall.
Hope this helps. By the way, do you know if there are other students admitted to Berkeley? When did they begin confirmimg admissions?
Best!

Hi asterion,
I spoke at Berkeley, they said they have just started sending out admissions today...also they said its 2 weeks from the time I get the postal letter...but the lady at their office said, "don't stress about it, you can tell us by end of the month." She said there is no fee for securing the place, just acceptance form. I guess I'll wait to see their postal letter and form before freaking out anymore!
Good luck with your admissions, and hopefully we'll meet at one of these schools. Which country are you from? I am Indian, settled in US from last 5 years...

strange? I reveive a letter from Boalt Hall on Dec.30 2005 the original information as following:
"We are pleased to inform you that your application for admission has
been received by the Advanced Law Degree Programs Office at the
University of California, Berkeley School of Law.
Our review process is very thorough and time consuming. During this
period, we request that you do not call unless the matter is urgent and
can be handled in no other way. We will notify you of the decision on
your application as soon as possible, and at the latest by the middle of
April. However, you should note that all applications will be reviewed
beginning in early March regardless of how early they are received.
Please email me to confirm that you have received this email"

Hey there. There is one great LL.M. in Human Rights in Miami, at St. Thomas University School of Law. The instruction and the diversity surpass nay human rights porgram in the U.S.

Hi tt,
A couple of weeks ago I contacted Boalt Admissions. They informed me that this year they were going to review applications early and that I should receive a notice within the following weeks. So the fact that some acceptance letters have already been sent is consistent to what Admissions told me.
Does anyone know the steps of Boalt's admissions process ? Do they notify all acceptances at once? Do they have waiting lists? Would they consider a new application next year if I don't get accepted this year?
I can't help feeling a little worried. I only applied to Berkeley and Stanford (Berkeley is my top choice). But I know there is nothing else I can do at this point. So I guess I'll follow your steps, keep calm and wait until March.
Good luck!

I also received an email of admission this morning and it goes like this:
"Dear Mr. __,
I am pleased to inform you that the Advanced Legal Studies Committee of the School of Law has admitted you to the program of study leading to the LL.M. degree for the 2006-2007 academic year.
We hope you will accept this offer of admission. Boalt Hall is enriched by students with impressive records such as yours.
Please note that current tuition and fees are approximately $35,000.00. However, fees are subject to increase. Please plan your budget accordingly.
This email is being sent in addition with an official letter of
admittance by postal mail. To confirm your place in the 2006-2007 class, please return the enclosed form no later than two weeks after receipt of this letter. If you are undecided about whether you wish to attend Boalt Hall for any reason (including waiting for notification from another school), you may request that we place your name on our
waiting list. Placement on the waiting list, however, means that you will no longer have a guaranteed place in the LL.M. program.
This offer of admission is contingent on satisfactory completion of your remaining course work, if any, and receipt of your final transcripts and diploma. You should be aware that admission to the LL.M. program does
not constitute admission to the J.S.D., J.D. or any other graduate programs at Berkeley.
Financial aid decisions are made separately from admissions. If you applied for financial aid from Boalt Hall, you may expect to hear from us later...."
How come they didn't tell me that I should pay a deposit for securing the place? Or that would be mentioned in the postal letter?

I also got the e-mail of admission earlier today. I am so excited about it! Berkeley is one of my dreaming schools!
Posted Feb 22, 2006 13:02
You won't find anything about a deposit on the letter or email because Berkeley unlike certain other universities does not demand payment to accept their offer of a place for you. Instead, you accept and don't pay anything for some time.
