Hello, I got a problem which similar to the one posted by Fallacy. I got my master degree in UK but it is engineering! I am now studying the LLB in HKU part time. Dont have a good result in A-level (GCE-AL) :P and now working as enginnering consultant in the government sector for 5 years. I am planning to get my LLM, and my aspiration is studying in Oxford or cambridge. What can I do to achieve this? Do any one has any experience as a part time law student ? Your advise is highly apprecipated.

Hi Everyone,

Your discussion was very informative as well as encouraging. This message is to just understand as to what chances do i stand in suceeding the Oxbridge Addmissions or any such universities for an LL.M/BCL program.

1. I am currently in my final year of my LL.B(India) from the best technology institute of the country and my LL.B would also be a speacialization in Intellectual Property Laws.

2. I have an under- graduation degree in technology (4years course) majoring in Bioinformatics.

3. I have a first class in my Technology Bachelors and am expecting the same in my current bachelor degree in law.

4. I have no publications and have only done Internships at 6 places where 2 of those are during my technology degree and the remaining were pursued during the course of my current program. One of the interships were done at the coutries most prized law firms, another with the Chief Justice of a High Court and the others were also in places of repute.

5. My recommeders are very confident about me in their letters and these people are some of the finest academicians of the country including a former judge of the Supreme Cout of India.

6. My statement of purpose if defenitly not a master's work in itself.

Given these attributes what chances would i stand to make it to Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, LSE, Kings and Harvard. It would be very kind on your part if the same can be evaluated based upon your experiences. Hoping to find a suitable post soon.

There is some weird advice being offered on this site.

If you have a question, why not email or phone (via Skype if overseas) the relevant Faculty office to ask it?

Many people on this list seem to enjoy posting details of their resume for purposes which remain opaque.

If in doubt, send in an application! What is there to lose?

One other piece of advice: applying to Oxford, describe yourself accurately but modestly.

Applying to US schools may require a higher level of self-promotion and puffery, but not to Oxford.

its curious how people here busy showcasing thier attributes... totally agree with you over there...
from what i could make out from the oxbridge prospects, they only look at the academic strength of a student's profile.
i m sure there is no mention of extra-currilcular achievements over there. not that any one of us wont have them but it doesnt seem to carry much wait over there...
they seem to be more concerned with churning out academically strong students...

whats ur take on that?

I cant really speak on the Oxford front but, as far as Cambridge is concerned (which I presume is fairly similar), I have been told that extra curriculars matter little- especially anything sports related- with the law faculty. Obviously, they will expect to see certain, academic related extra curriculars, but anything that is too far removed from your purpose of going to the institution- for the LLM- will harm your application. Not to say you wont get it, just that it wont help.

Ah, I think LLM Guide's discussion boards are further proof that law students love to start spouting their CVs at any opportunity to as many people as possible...even when the spouting's coming from an alias.

Well done on all those articles, internships and grades everyone!
