Hello!
I'm getting the party started for Oxford. I'm applying for the MLF, but I think we can discuss all the various programs here.
Good luck to everybody! January 22 is right around the corner.

I reckon that it is a tad late for 2020-2021 applications :))
On a serious note: are you guys planning to include some sort of a reference list at the end of your written work, or should referencing in footnotes suffice?

Hi, I did not include any bibliography and got an offer :)

I'm also applying - from Australia.
I'm a little confused about what kind of essay to submit. In our first law degrees, we don't write a lot of essays in private law subjects - mainly in legal philosophy/criminal/public law; yet my main interest is private law. I'm thinking of submitting a legal philosophy essay to give them an idea of my ability...

Hi
I have a similar question. Should the essay be linked to the research topic that you have in mind ( that you would mention in your personal statement)? They say it is not necessary but anyone has further insights? Also, should you present the names of your supervisor or they choose? As a lawyer, I wish to undertake consti law lessons also, but I am unable to find a supervisor with this background or research interests, how will my application be viewed then?

Don't worry too much about the essay topic; I've sent an essay on investment law and got offers for the MLF and the MSc in Taxation which have nothing to do with investment law :) Just ensure that the essay you are planning to send is of the highest quality and that it is very very analytical.

In terms of the coverage of the essay, do you have suggestions as to whether it should be local, global or comparative in perspective? I have a topic in mind that deals with the constitutional situation in one country so I dont know if that would do...

I think that it doesn't really matter. I sent two essays on international law and it was completely fine; they are primarily looking for your analytical skills and want to assess your writing, and thus the subject does not matter that much. Maybe I would avoid something that is very obscure or not really "legal".
DM me if you want me to send you the essay I submitted.

Hey everyone,
I am finishing my application right now. Thinking about choosing Pembroke as a college, how about you?
Has anyone else applied to the scholarships as well?
Best of luck to us!

Question about the written work - most of my law school essays were around 10,000 words so I'm having a hard time figuring out how to submit only 2,000 words. Any tips on how to pick the extract and how much context I should be providing?

Hi there! Who is applying to the MLF program? Do you guys think or know if for the MLF, relevant work experience is more useful than for the BCL/Mjur?

I faced a similar problem when I was applying. Try to pick an extract that shows your analysis and provide it with an abstract which sets out the relevant context so that your abstract does not look out of place. DM me if you want to see how I did it

Nope, I had no experience and I got the offer. Unlike US universities, Oxford is primarily looking for a strong academic acumen. Work experience, however, can help with the personal statement, e.g. through work experience, you can show your interest in the area or your reason to pursue the MLF (to improve your career prospects etc).

Hi guys! Does anyone know if we are expected to include a bibliography with our 2000 word written work? I know its not included in the word count but idk the bibliography itself is expected.
Also, does the preface contribute towards the 2000 word count? Thank you.

No bibliography is needed, but I would recommend adjusting the footnotes to oscola, especially if you are using cross-references. The preface is not included in the word count, but don't make it too long.

If you dont mind, would you please share your profile with us, i.e., which country you are from, class position, ECAs, working experience, publications etc. We could get a picture what kind of profile BCL accepts. Thank you in advance.

Sure, however, I was not applying for the BCL. I'm from Poland (but nationality is not relevant in the apps), I have a First Class degree from a non-RG British university, I had one academic prize for the best dissertation, I had little work experience at the time of applying and no publications back then either. Regardless of who gets accepted and who doesnt't, it is always worth trying :)
