MLitt in Law: University of Cambridge (Official Thread) (2020-21)

Geckmon

Hello!

To the people of the LL.M Guide wishing to undertake the MLitt next academic year, I have a proposition:

Due to (a) the overall lack of activity anywhere online; (b) the fact that we are (likely) a small cohort of applicants compared with the other postgraduate programmes at Cambridge; and, (c) there is little guidance online as to when/how offers or rejections are released, I think that creating a space where we can discuss our individual application process, concerns, and general information is a good idea.

Not only will this help future MLitt applicants (so that they do not have to guess timescales like we do, ect.), but it provides some degree of support for ourselves. We know, by engaging with this page, that there are at least some other people embarking on the same (tedious) journey that we are going through.

So... if there are survivors of this process - whether past or present - out there, please feel as though you can contribute to this discussion. Moreover, please ensure that you share information in an informal and respectful manner so as to make everybody feel comfortable.

I look forward to speaking with everyone and hearing your experiences!

My status:
Still "under review by the department" (as of around 16th Jan).

All the best,
Geckmon

Hi! Thanks for the initiative :) I’m an applicant too. Quite clueless and not optimistic about the process, but that’s a part of the charm of it I guess haha. No previous master’s degree. My status changed to “under review” on 20 December.

You're not doing too badly if your application is still under consideration! At least we have not been rejected so far :)

What are you looking to research if you don't mind me asking?

No news from what I can gather. There may be some movement later in the month (as the Cambridge website indicates) so watch this space...

All the best and keep the thread updated if there's any movement! :)

Thank you very much for sharing that. It serves to distance one from the need to compulsively check the applicant portal during the remainder of this week, lol.

Hi all,
I’ve applied for the MLitt in Law as well - I want to do research in Comparative Constitutional Law. :)
As of today March 11th my application is still under review by the department!
This thread is a nice idea though because there is really no information on the course from current or past students - almost feels like nobody actually studies the degree. :P
Best of luck in all your applications!

Nothing here either. Admissions aside, I hope everyone is keeping well at this time: the quarantine-application combo is definitely an interesting experience (to put it mildly).

Stay safe,
Geckmon :)

It might be interesting for future applicants to know that it is now the month of April and my application remains "under review by department". It would be reasonable to take into account the health crisis, though.

It seems we are doomed to keep on waiting. Can't help but think there will be a likely impact on funding opportunities for those who get admitted.

Certainly so. This year's application deadline for numerous scholarships was 27 March.

Hi guys, hope we are all keeping safe. I received an email from Cambridge earlier today requesting for a breakdown of my transcript showing marks or grades obtained. I had only uploaded the final certificate. Hopefully this means they are almost finalizing the process and can provide responses within the month. Hopefully.

Hi! I hope you're keeping safe too. Thank you very much for letting us know, it was starting to look as if they had forgotten about the course haha. Let's hope for the best now.

Hi guys, anyone heard anything from Cambridge? Or written an email and gotten a sense of the timing for decisions? Their silence is quiet unnerving.

Hi! I received my rejection today. Hopefully there will be better news for you guys soon :)
The timeline was dreadful this year (8 months since submitting, over a year since I began to work on the research proposal):

18 Sept 2019: Submitted.
20 Dec 2019: Moved to "under review by department."
6 Mar 2020: Gates rejection.
15 May 2020: Rejection.

Hi Finafirn, thanks for the update although am sorry to hear you got a rejection. Still stuck at review at the department stage and contemplating whether to withdraw my application. Seems Cambridge has made a decision to only have online classes for the next academic year
