Cambridge LL.M. Applicants 2022-2023

I have to say I am beginning to lose hope. I also checked and I'm "under review".

I think Cambridge have been inundated with applications by loads of people waiting for covid restrictions to abate, so we have to compete with 2 or 3 years of stellar students who had been holding back their applications. Plus, their strike didn't help.

By the time they get to my application, they've probably read 500 excellent applications and have given out their offers. I think it becomes a numbers game. 2639

I know that waiting is frustrating, but isn’t it a bit much to bash them this much for not much else (I’m not sure what other chaos is referred to with the PhD and MCL) than being somewhat later in updating to PAO status than previous years? The uni has had periods of industrial action and this is also the first year since covid with fairly decent prospects of normal in-person teaching and other activities for the whole academic year, making it reasonable to assume a higher application base than normal. They might therefore also have seen the need to readjust how many offers they can give out without the risk of getting completely oversubscribed. I’m sure more applicants than usual would also be harder to properly evaluate now that more applicants would have more or less their entire undergrad affected by covid. I don’t find it particularly unreasonable if they decided that they needed more time for their final decisions, as they’re not exactly bound by any ‘precedents’ from past decisions. PAO status is in any case manually changed and could be affected by something as simple as someone being sick at the moment. Several applicants might well be at PAO already without an update on their portal yet. Surely what matters is rather the offer in the end?

Also consider that some applicants might be stuck in “review” for a fairly long time because of the hidden waiting list. I can agree that they could get much better with informing about the existence of this list when that time comes, though… I’m sure it would be helpful to many applicants if they hired one more person in the administration to met the realities of the increased workload over there.

Isn’t the MCL application process supposed to happen before LLM because there might be people who have applied for both, and might want to withdraw their LLM application after getting the MCL?
