Guys, please help me......What's the best age to apply for an LLM? I'm a lawyer in Italy and I'd like to apply for a master degree, either in IP or in human rights and int. public/criminal law. I'm 31 now. If I am accepted I will start at the age of 32. Am I too old? What do you think?
Thank you!

Friend by no stretch of imagination nor by any yardstick whatsoever are you too old for any enterprise.
Perhaps some would say that you havethe right mix of youth and experience and that would be a wonderful combination
cheers

PS You have the name of a great oriental law giver !?

I was preoccupied for the same reason as you, I am a female attorney at 28 and I am interested in the same subjects (human rights and criminal law). But,dear colleague, life happens once. Why miss an experience like that and regret later?

I thought most people did their LLMs at that age, late 20 or early 30...Why so worried about the age? It's only one year of studies anyways...

Thank you guys!!!
For Anya: Where are you applying for human rights? What's the best in Europe/ US? I was thinking of UCHIL in Geneva, it seems very appealing. Besides, it is located in the most important city in the world for NGOs and humatiraian organisations (I think). I'll apply at

UCHIL must be really great. I was told that University of Amsterdam and University of Glasgow have interesting programmes in this field, as well. And, since you are Italian, do you know anything about UNICRI in Turin? Is there a master programme?
Posted Dec 18, 2005 21:48
Hi, no I don't know about the program in Turin. But I can get some information and I'll let you know. I have a couple of friends wqho studied in Torino, even though in different subjects, however I think they can give me some suggestion about the oprogram in hum,an rights.
Have you already applied to any university?

Buongiorno! No, I am trying to get ready the reference letters, which is really hard. I believe by the end of January i will have everything ready.I will apply to the Uof London (King's,UCL,QM),to Paris 1, to Edinburgh and maybe to Glasgow. You see, I want to focus on the violation of human rights concerning the criminal procedure, not generally human rights. Plus, Geneva and Amsterdam are VERY expensive (11000 euro p/y i think). How about you?
Posted Dec 19, 2005 21:23
Ciao.... Well, I'll send my application package this week to UCL and Geneve, I hope to get the reference letter for Geneve tomorrow morning. I already have the one for UCL.
Actually, I'd prefer Geneve, I think oits program is really stimulating and "different" from others. I think I'll apply to Amsterdam and maybe Leiden and KCL as well. Yes, the programs in Amsterdam and Geneva are more expensive than the London ones, but life in London is prohibitive... although very exciting!!!!!
A question: are you specialised in criminal procedure? I ask this because I am not (I'm a civilist, may I say so?) and I'm not sure I will be able to work in a "criminal environment", (I don't have the background) although it should be very interesting.
Were are you from?
ciao ciao

I am Greek, I live and work in Athens. It's fun here, but I really want to live in a different place for a while.London is expensive, but it has many advantages from every aspect. Amo anche l'Italia, ho viaggiato dappertuto.E tu, dove abiti? (sorry, my italian is poor).Yes, I am a criminal lawyer. It drives you from hell to heaven, depends on the result. Many hours of work, and since I am occupied by an other lawyer, I do the work, he gets the money. So,please tell me, how is practicing law in Italy? Wellpaid? Too many hours?
Have you considered of a human right's master in Venezia? I was told that there is something nice there.UN has department there and I believe it must be good.
I have also made a practice in prisons, that's why I am so sensitive about hrights in criminal law. Tones of things need to be done there....
Allora,ciao. Or geia sou!

I know exactly what you mean.... hard job, too many hours, no private life and... no money!!!! In Italy is the same for young lawyers, and I would advice anybody not to undertake this "career"!!!!!! Besides, I live in Milano and it seems that there arehere more lawyers than "normal" people....
I know that in Venice there is a good program, but I don't want to stay in Italy, I think that a LLM is worth and useful if you do it in a different country from yours. Let me know about your decisons, maybe we undertake this new experience in the same place... it should be nice!
Greece.... I love it! And I love Athens! I have been there many times as some years ago I had a Greek boyfriend... Greek men are wonderful ;-) ........

@manu
I feel some discomfort reading words like yours... What the hell has society done to people that they consider themselves just as "objects" that have to fit a certain scheme? There is no such social norm that you are too old for anything that you like to do. You can never be too old for a good experience. One of my best friends and fellow undergraduate student was 51 years when he commenced. Only a few had reservations as to his age. Most people tend to take it easy actually.
So, please: Do whatever you like to do and do not dare to consider what "people might think".
