Hey guys,

I visited Montreal last weekend and signed the lease for a bachelor pad in the McGill ghetto. I also visited campus and the ICL faculty building but everything was closed since it was the weekend. I looked at close to 30 apartments through the weekend before I finalized on this one. It's off Aylmer and Lorne Avenue and a 2 minute walk from campus. I'm glad I found the place and I also noticed that places are getting filled up really fast. I have the contact details of a few apartments that probably have not been taken yet. So if any of you want to get in touch with them, email me at mithun.pemmaiah@gmail.com and I will send you the info. Most of the places I saw are bachelor pads (or 1and a half's, as they call it) and in the range of $500-600.

About the course selections, I was under the impression that we could select courses after the meeting with the Associate Dean. I know that Charles and Patosky have already done it, but I wanna ask the others if they have also made their choices or will do it after? Keep me updated.

Charles and Alex, my meeting with the Associate Dean is at 2.20 PM on the 24th. So if you guys are around after yours, then it would be nice if we can meet up. Lemme know.

The email we got a couple of weeks ago said something like, "Make sure you register for the placeholder course, but you can register for other stuff now, too, and finalize after the meeting with the Dean." So I went ahead and registered for what I was thinking of taking, though I'm considering switching out Civil Law Perspectives for another seminar (maybe Medieval Law, even though it's brutally early in the morning). If you can figure out the Minerva system, I don't think there's any harm in registering for classes before your meeting.

May have to skip town pretty quickly after the meeting to get back to New York, but can maybe stick around for coffee or lunch or something. Another possibility is something Monday afternoon/evening - I am probably going to be over on campus filing my visa paperwork and getting an ID and such, assuming I do not have to sit in my apartment all day waiting for the guy from Videotron to hook up my internet... While not right off campus, my apartment isn't too far away (Papineau stop on the Green Line), so it's pretty easy to get wherever in the downtown area.

Hello everybody,

I just wanted to give my opinion concerning some topics hereover discussed:

However, I'm still nutting out the technicalities of registration. Now I have registered most/all of my coursework, but not any courses for Summer 2011. I wonder: are the other non-thesis LLM also 27 credits of coursework?

@ Jonathan:
My Faculty of Law non-thesis LL.M. requires 30 course credits of which 8 are mandatory (CMPL 641 Theoretical Approaches to Law (4) & CMPL 610 Legal Research Methodology (4) ).
When I went to see Ms Chiarelli at the Faculty of Law, she told me that I should chose all my courses before meeting with the Dean and that I could still switch afterwards. Courses we are allowed to take are 500 (mix of undergrads and grads) and 600s (only grad students).
As I chose the regular LL.M. in the Faculty in order to have maximum flexibility in chosing my classes, here's what I chose:

CMPL 543 Law & Practice of Intl Trade Fall
CMPL 610D1 Legal Research Methodology Fall *
CMPL 533 Resolution of Int'l Disputes Fall
ASPL 637 Space Law: General Principles Fall
CMPL 641 Theoretical Approaches to Law Fall *

CMPL 500 Aboriginal Peoples and the Law Winter
CMPL 602 Common Law Perspectives Winter
CMPL 604 International Business Law Winter
ASPL 638 Law of Space Applications Winter
CMPL 610D2 Legal Research Methodology Winter *

* mandatory courses
PROBLEM: 31 credits... One too much. I'll see with the dean!

It's a little bit of everything and I hope I got it right, since I don't want to pursue to a DCL (for the moment...). However, I know a girl from Spain who intended to enroll in a non-thesis LL.M. last year and changed her mind after meeting the dean who told her to pursue a DCL and therefore write a "big" thesis. She says non-thesis students are pretty busy the whole year and she missed having classes regularly. Well, I personally think both ways can lead to a DCL!

Yes definitely, I'll be there! However I'm not in Montreal on Monday evening, Charles, as I'm going on the Gaspésie trip and I won't be back until late Monday night.

Though I have a rude shock while doing so. I discovered that Civil Law perspective is closed right now! i guess that is because it is quite popular with the students. now does that mean I cannot take the course. It is one of the courses I was earnestly looking forward to taken and I ll be massively dissapointed if I cannot do so. anybody has any idea whether i can still take it.

I had a look on Minerva, unless I'm wrong, isn't there still some place in this one??? Check it out Patosky!
Course ref # 5834, CMPL 601Seminar Civil Law Perspectives. Helge Dedek NOTES: Students must attend Adv Civil Law Oblgs- PROC 200 lectures
There are 5 places and only 2 taken. However, not sure what this NOTE means...

Cheers, Alexandra

Well, looks like the orientation schedule is finally out:

http://www.mcgill.ca/files/law-studies/10GradStudents-OrientationSchedule.pdf

Looks like there is a movie I will be missing on Wednesday and a welcome party I'll probably miss on Friday. Otherwise, looks like stuff we already knew about, except for the computer training session thing.

Hey everyone. I just dropped Civil Law Perspectives from my schedule, so there should be an opening in it now, for anyone who couldn't get a spot. That said, I should probably warn you that Prof. Jutras told me that about 1/3 of the readings are in French and some class discussions will be in French, so you will probably only want to register for it if your French is pretty good.

Thanks charles, Massive pity for the french requirement ! I was really really looking forward to this course. However my just below average knowledge of french will not do to read legal literature or to follow discussions in class. Does anybody know any other course that can fill the gap and give basic knowledge of civil law?

Thanks all

Gentlemen,

Finally got my study permit! I can now confirm i ll be in Montreal by Tuesday. So the time has come for me to resolve the issue of accommodation.

Please does anybody have an idea of a place located preferably in a french speaking part of Montreal, a one bedroom flat or a studio, no bugs, as much amenities as possible. my budget is between 400 and 650 dollars. dont have much choice now so any good place meeting the above requirements or some of them will do.

Gentlemen please treat as urgent as i will be landing in Montreal and have no where to stay for now.

thanks a bunch
