The Program
The Master of Comparative Business Law (M.C.B.L.) is an advanced academic program providing an in-depth understanding of business law aspects of the European single market and the Global market.
The program aims at providing students with competence in both comparative and business law, sharpening them in their careers as strategic decision makers in the public as well as the private sector. It offers a unique combination of traditional comparative law studies (legal methodology and the common/civil law divide) and studies in business law (e.g. competition law, contract law and company law) including trade related aspects. Furthermore, it provides general and specific knowledge of the European Union legal framework and of the actors in international trade law.
The M.C.B.L. is a high-level demanding postgraduate program in the fields of European and International business law. The Program is designed for law graduates, or graduates with a sufficient background in law, who wish to pursue advanced studies to specialize in the area of Business Law with a comparative perspective.
The program consists of compulsory, intensive and elective modules. The content of the modules has been chosen carefully. The modules are composed in an order, which ensures the ideal development of both academic and professional competences.

The University

The University of Mannheim
The University of Mannheim is one of the leading universities of Germany.
Staff members at six schools and departments teach and carry out research in Business Administration, Economics, the Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, and Business Informatics and Mathematics. Researchers at the university collaborate with numerous national and international partners.
Every fifth student at the university comes from abroad to pursue their bachelor’s or master’s degree, or doctorate in Mannheim. Students of the Mannheim Business School also come from overseas to obtain a management qualification at one of the top 25 MBA providers in the world.
The University of Mannheim is considered one of the most beautiful universities in Germany. It is located in the baroque palace in the heart of Mannheim and all buildings can be reached by foot within a short time.
The Law School

Mannheim's law school consistently ranks among the leading group of law schools in Germany. Due to its small size, our law school boasts an excellent student-teacher ratio.
In the THE World University Ranking 2021, the University of Mannheim is ranked 13th in Germany, and is number 140 worldwide. In the global subject rankings 2020, the university is number 1 in Germany for Economics and Business Administration as well as for the Social Sciences, and number 39 and number 38 worldwide respectively. In the THE Europe Teaching Ranking, the University of Mannheim ranks 2nd in Germany.
The Faculty
Research and teaching activity at the Department of Law is clearly oriented towards business and economic law. The strong focus on excellent research and teaching in these particular fields of law is unparalleled in Germany. The Department of Law covers a broader spectrum of subjects related to business and economic law than any other law school. Traditionally, there has always been a strong link between research and teaching, science, and practical application at the University of Mannheim. That is why in recent years the Department of Law has earned the reputation of being one of the leading German schools in the areas of business law and economic law.
Entry Requirements
The Master of Comparative Business Law (M.C.B.L.) program is not selective. All applicants who meet the admission requirements will therefore be sent an official letter of admission.
Applicants need to have a bachelor’s degree in Law from a university in Germany or abroad or from a state-recognized university of cooperative education (Berufsakademie). The following requirements must be met:
- The bachelor's degree must correspond to at least 240 ECTS credits or have a standard period of study of at least eight semesters/four years. In exceptional cases, the admissions committee may allow relevant work experience to be counted towards the required ECTS credits.
- A degree in a different field is sufficient if it is recognized as equivalent by the Admission Committee and if students have obtained at least 20 ECTS credits in law subjects.
- The Admission Committee may waive the requirement of proof of law contents for applicants with a first degree recognized as equivalent if the applicant can prove his or her qualification for the Master of Comparative Business Law – M.C.B.L. by different means.
- A letter of motivation and a CV in English must be submitted along with the application.

Language requirements
Applcants must be very proficient in English. The following proof of English proficiency is accepted:
- a higher education entrance qualification from a school in a country with English as an official language after at least one year of school,
- the successful completion of a program of study at a higher education institution with English as the language of instruction and examination and a duration of at least one year,
- a certificate of the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet Based Test (TOEFL iBT) with a score of at least 90 points,
- a certificate of the International English Language Testing System – Academic Test (IELTS) with an overall band score of at least 6.5,
- an equivalent result of a test recognized as comparable. The Admission Committee shall decide on the comparability of the test individually.
Conditional admission
Applicants who have not yet completed their bachelor’s program by the application deadline, may still be admitted to the master’s program as long as proof is provided that the applicant has obtained at least 190 ECTS credits. In this case, the admission to the program is subject to receipt of a degree certificate by a specified point in time (please refer to M.C.B.L. Selection statutes).

Tuition and Fees
Mensa Mannheim
1. Tuition fee: EUR 8,500 (for the entire program)
2. Semester fee: all students studying at a higher education institution in Germany are required to pay a semester fee. The semester fee charged by the University of Mannheim is currently EUR 194,30. In order to be enrolled or re-registered for the next semester semester fees must be paid. The semester fee is made up of three separate contributions:
Administration fee: EUR 70,00
Studierendenwerk fee: EUR 110,30
Fee for the constituted student body: EUR 14,00
3. Additional costs: student health insurance (about EUR 100.00 per month in Germany) as well as other personal costs.

Upon written request, which is to be submitted together with the application for the M.C.B.L. program, particularly qualified applicants and applicants who cannot pay the tuition fees due to financial hardship could be partially exempted from paying the fees.

Location
Mannheim, Germany
Mannheim is the second-largest city in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, with a 2020 population of approximately 309,119 inhabitants, and cultural hub of the Rhine-Neckar triangle. Mannheim also offers excellent possibilities for shopping, an internationally renowned cultural scene covering all branches of arts, remarkable museums and galleries and one of the loveliest parks in Europe.
It is also an extremely well situated city. Mannheim's inhabitants enjoy, in a 20 km radius of its city borders, the Odenwald natural park to the Northeast, the tourist hotspot Heidelberg to the East, and the Pfälzer Weinstrasse, Germany's foremost wine region, to the West. From Mannheim, there are direct high-speed trains to all major German cities and, among others, to Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels.
Accommodation
The Studierendenwerk Mannheim (an organization responsible for all social aspects of studying) runs a number of university-owned dormitories within Mannheim, most of them located in close proximity to the university. Applications for these dormitories usually outnumber the places offered. Therefore, early application for student housing is recommended. Apart from the university-owned dormitories, the Studierendenwerk also has a private room location service.

The Studierendenwerk ensures student welfare in close cooperation with the university and also caters for students' social needs. Among its main responsibilities are the acquisition of affordable accommodation and the promotion of students' academic interests.
