The Program
EMLE provides an experience lauded as “an outstanding educational concept” which synthesizes law and economics together into a programme that is both manageable in its structure and innovative in its design.
This programme creates an atmosphere of internationality through its students and its universities, which provides both a learning experience for its scholars and a desirable trait for future employers. The combination of law and economics fosters an atmosphere of idea sharing and introduces different techniques for examining and handling problems. EMLE is forging a path in producing future lawyers and economists equipped with an interdisciplinary background ready to handle the multidimensional challenges of European and international business and law.
The programme includes three kinds of courses:
- Economics Courses: In order to make law students more familiar with basic economic reasoning, some courses are more economics-oriented.
- Comparative Law Courses: Some courses deal with comparative law in order to internationalise the legal background of the students. Please note that all references to law in all courses will be of a comparative kind, due to the all-European character of the programme and the international composition of the student body.
- Law and Economics Courses: Most courses deal directly with the economic analysis of the most important branches of private, public, international and European law. The students will be confronted with examples of their native and foreign systems.
The programme duration is one academic year, consisting of three terms; the first term comprises introductory courses as well as core courses on the major topics in the economic analysis of law, although the composition and structure of the materials used in the courses vary slightly. In the second term students take specialized courses, within the specialization of their chosen track. In the third term further specialized courses are offered and students will write their master’s thesis.
Students can choose to follow one of three different specialisation tracks in the EMLE programme:
1) the Public and International Track,
2) the Innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) Track, and
3) the Markets, Corporations & Regulators (MCR) Track.
Students are not obliged to follow a track but will earn a recognizing certificate if they do so.
The EMLE is a full time programme and all courses are taught in English. EMLE covers one academic year, for which successful students will receive 60 ECTS.
The University
Hamburg
The unique international and interdisciplinary character of the EMLE Programme is secured through an intensive co-operation between lawyers and economists at no less than 10 European and Non-European Universities.
In the first term, courses will be offered at the universities of Rotterdam, Hamburg and Barcelona. In the second term students will study at the universities of Ghent, Hamburg or Rotterdam. In the third term there is a wide range of courses and thesis topics to choose from. Courses are offered in Aix-en-Provence, Arizona, Barcelona, Hamburg, Haifa, Mumbai, Rome, and Warsaw.
The Law School

The Erasmus + (Erasmus Plus) European Master Programme in Law and Economics, in short the EMLE Programme, offers you the unique opportunity to study at two or three European and Non-European universities and to obtain an officially recognised joined and/or double degree. It provides you with advanced knowledge on the economic effects of divergent laws and prepares you for a career in public organisations or multinational law firms.
The European Master in Law and Economics (EMLE) programme provides a level of academic excellence recognized by Erasmus Mundus as well as additional academic experts. The programme has recruited distinguished scholars from across Europe and the rest of the world to share their knowledge and instruct the next generation of lawyers, economists, and policy makers.
Accredited by numerous institutions in Europe, the programme also provides a supreme level of internationality in its professors, universities and its students.
Each participating university awards an LL.M. degree or a master degree which is equivalent to an LL.M. The EMLE programme has received the Erasmus + (Erasmus Plus) label, along with only few other masters courses. One of the implications of the Erasmus + (Erasmus Plus) label is that the EMLE programme is able to grant student scholarships annually to Non-European and European students. Also mobility grants are available for each student who fulfills specific requirements. In every academic year the EMLE awards on average up to 15 students with a full scholarship from the European Commission.
Alumni
Rome (LUMSA)
Alumni who would like to reach out to former EMLE colleagues or get into touch with EMLE students from different years, can stay in touch via Facebook or LinkedIn. The EMLE maintains several Facebook groups, including one Alumni Group where EMLE students and Alumni can keep in contact with each other. The group is also used by the programme management to post items of possible interest for EMLE Alumni. Registration can be done through Facebook.
All EMLE Alumni are qualified to join the Erasmus Mundus Students and Alumni Association. The EMA offers an international professional and personal network for Erasmus Mundus students and graduates. For more information, please click here.

Entry Requirements
Haifa
The EMLE is a postgraduate course. Preference will be given to applicants who have already a first masters degree. We select for students with at least 240 ECTS (four-years) of prior higher education. This could have been obtained by a three-year bachelor programme and a first master’s degree, or by a four-year bachelor programme.
Besides graduates in Law or Economics, applicants with other degrees may also apply under the condition that they can show in their letter of motivation that they are clearly interested in studying the economic analysis of law and that they have a clear idea about the approach they will learn to apply within the EMLE programme.

Tuition and Fees
Mumbai
Tuition fees depend on the way students have been recruited:
- The tuition fee for European students is 7,500 EUR.
- The tuition fee for Non-European students is 12,000 EUR
The fees outlined above cover the cost of tuition for the entire programme

- Tuition rate listed refers to cost for domestic / EU students. The rate for international students is 12,000 EUR.
- The program is offered jointly by seven European and three international universities.
- Students who participate in the EMLE program will receive a joint degree and/or a degree from every partner university where they have spent a term.
