UPenn vs Cornell

audry

Hello,

I've been accepted to UPenn and I'm still waiting for Cornell's answer (they apparently have so much applications that answering is going to take longer that it usually takes).
I only have a week left to accept UPenn's offer.
What would you advise me? UPenn or Cornell?

Thank you

call cornell's office in order to know all your possibilities. if cornell's office is to slow, accept upenn's offer.

Other than its higher ranking, any other reason to prefer Penn over Cornell?

Also, Penn is known for its strength in corporate and business law (due to wharton? cmiiw). How about Cornell, what's its strength?

UPenn for a bunch of reasons: from higher rankings to better international reputation, from being in a wonderful city (and not in the middle of nowhere) to a more decent wheather... To me your choice is not that hard...

Although I am not a fan of Philly, I think UPenn has one of the best programs with respect to business, corporate and humanities law...so if these fields match your interest, I'd not wait for Cornell...

I have been accepted to Penn but I have not get Cornell's decision. I have completed my application to Cornell on the first week of February but I just got Cornell's email confirming that my application is complete last week while Penn's deadline to pay the deposit is May 1.

The reason why I am waiting for Cornell's decision is that I am hoping to get scholarship from Cornell (I got no scholarship from Penn). However, the scholarship is not the determining factor since I will be going anyway even though I get no scholarship (my parents will pay for my LLM, but scholarship will ease them A LOT.).

So, am I waiting for something that worth it? How does it compare? Penn without scholarship or Cornell with scholarship?

I would choose UPENN without hesitation if you can fully afford it. The reasons for that have already been discussed extensively.

Simply go to UPENN!!

I also got accepted but have deferred for a year due to financial constraints!

good luck!

I am in Upenn = beautiful campus, great weather (don't you know that it's always sunny in Philadelphia ?) really close to NY to go out some week ends and go to expositions.
Really close to Washington for some interviews.
Go to Atlantic city in summer for a day on the beach, studying your exams.
The food is good !! Philly is the capital of gastronomy in the US.
It is bike friendly. ( very flat !)
Opportunities in Penn are amazing.
Great networking with Wharton.
... and I am sure I forget a lot about it...

Have fun, Me I don't want to go home !!!

Hey CMC,

I am accepted at Penn for next year but deferred for a year coz cant get the funding. But I will most probably go there in 2011-2012. It is comnforting to read your comments. what prgramme are you doing?

When you say great opportunites, what do you mean by that?
Are you doing the certificate as well at Wharton?

Finally, where are you from?

Thanks!

Hi,

I am from France. I am not doing the Wharton programm because you need 3 years of professional experience and I used to teach as a professor assistant while doing my Phd ( I stopped my Phd to do the LLM and I ll go back to it) which is not considered as "lawyer professonal experience".
But a lot of friends in my class of course are taking it.
It costs more but it is the world's famous MBA programm so, it is worth to put it in a resume !
Some got in with only 2 years of experience and some motivation letters.
But if you don't get in you can still choose one class in the MBA programm ( but out of the certificate) at Wharton, and learn something that is not law ( let's say managment or financial accounting etc...) and still put it in your resume :!

Concerning the opportunities : Penn gots a loads of International journal where you can write in, lots of networking events are organized, many things where you can meet with important people depending on what is your specialty.
( One of our professor of Privacy was just recruted in the Obama administration "Allen"!)
The main event is the NY job fair organized for all the LLM students in the US in january.
Penn help you get prepared for it : go through your resume, work on your interviews etc...They try to give you advices as much as they can on how to network.

For now, around 10 people I know already get a job in the US. (Maybe more in my class but I don't know) and some other got jobs in Europe, in Asia .... Etc...

All the best,

CMC

hey CMC,

WOW!!! it was great finally reading something positive about Penn and its job opportunites and networking. I fully agree with everything you have said!!

I have to go but I WOULD like to stay in touch with you so we can discuss about the Penn experience which I am looking forward. I would have loved to be there in august but need to get the funding first. Do you think it makes a difference whether I do my LLm this year or next year at Penn?

I don't think it makes a real difference...
Penn ranking is pretty much the same every year.
So a priori ni risk !
You better get the funding first to fully enjoy your year here.
If you have another question ask me, I ll be happy to answer.

Best,

CMC.
