I just got an email from UPenn saying that:
"...the Committee felt in a number of instances that it could not take definitive action on a candidate's qualifications without reference to the general applicant pool, the deadline for applying to which is February 1. Your application was included in this group."
Did anyone else get this email? Does anyone know what this email mean? Were my chances to be admitted significantly hurt?
Thanks.

I also got deferred. Do I need to do something for the RD? Anyone who can give some advice? Thanks a lot.

I also got admitted !

Of those of you who have been admitted to UPenn as well, has anyone received any financial incentive to enroll? ;-) I assume decisions on scholarships will not be made/released until regular action admissions have been decided. Just wanted to check with everyone here before annoying the gad admission office. :-)
(Those following both Penn threads, please excuse the double post.)

Haven't heard anything about financial incentive. Would the decision be communicated via email?
Posted Jan 27, 2011 00:08
I would think so, the offer email suggested that any further communication regarding the offer would be sent via email. I assume that covers financial aid among others. However, I think the key question is the following: is it true that Penn only gives out 1-2 scholarships per year? That would make it extremely stringent in terms of financial aid. I wonder what the criteria would be then.

Does Penn really only give out 1-2 scholarships per year?! Let's just hope we early birds catch the worm...
Posted Jan 27, 2011 00:37
So I heard by a couple of friends who are Penn LLM alumni. I don't want to spread unsubstantiated rumors around but if it is the case indeed, it is a rather sucky one!
Posted Jan 27, 2011 01:02
Well if they take into account work experience then I don't really stand a good chance. I have been a forever student and all the 'work' I have done has only been sporadic internships and pro bonos...

It appears there are in fact only a few scholarships given out each year, but there have to be more than just 1-2. Didn't the application ask if one wanted to be considered for a Human Rights scholarship? Then there is the European Law (PLES) scholarship (2 - 4, I believe the website states) and I would imagine Penn may give out a couple more regular ones. So, yes, chances are slim but not as bad as at other law schools...

Hello all,
I too was wondering about this. I think we'll learn when the package arrives in March. My guess is that very few students will be offered aid. It is hard to get into a great law school and even harder to get money from them! Good luck to all, I'll let you know if I get anything.

Spikee, I suppose I was referring to the general scholarships and not the discipline specific ones as those wouldn't be applying to everyone. I would say Penn is quite low in its financial support towards students vis-a-vis other top law schools. I know Harvard for example usually helps most of the students with some sort of financial aid (either scholarships or loans). Berkeley tends to be quite generous in its grants in terms of quantity; a full ride might be hard but there are many partial grants. Of course I might be mistaken but this is at least the impression I have got thus far.
In terms of the further information that the offer email suggested, do you guys think that merely refers to the package in March or are we to expect anything else from them before that? I do wonder what that further info could entail though..

Has anyone who submitted their application in January heard anything yet?
How long does it typically take for the committee to reach a decision.
Thanks.

According to their email, decision will be released by March. So, I guess anytime soon.

I called the admissions office a couple of days ago on a different issue relating to my application submitted on January 14, and they said that they were still processing them, i.e. they have NOT started reviewing applications submitted in mid-January.

Verona,
I am surprised to here that because my status on the status checker has described my application as complete and under review by the committee since late January.
How is your status described?

What can i say? I called because my letters of recommendation still appear as not received, although they must have been received by Penn by January 18 at the very latest. I was told that it was too early to worry as the admissions office is still processing documents received in mid-January and they are planning on finishing by the end of next week and starting the review thereafter. Maybe it is wrong but this is what i was told.
