An external LLB degree will not qualify you to sit for the New York bar exam. An LLM degree from a U.S. school will not cure this deficiency. Before you apply to a U.S. school I would strongly suggest that you obtain an advance evaluation of your legal education from the NY Board of Law Examiners. You need to go to the BOLE website at www.nybarexam.org and complete the online foreign evaluation request form and ask your law school to mail an original transcript to the Board along with the other documents that are listed on the website.

you can sit for Cal bar if you're a registered lawyer in your home jurisdiction! hope that helps! though it REALLY helps if you do an llm first because it's just so hard.
