University of Chicago LLM 2023-24

RLLYJ

Noticed today that the status date had been updated to January 31, 2023. If the committee promises to release the decisions on February 15, think the decisions, or at least the preliminary ones, no matter positive or negative, should be available earlier so that they have buffer time to go through admin procedures before notification (like final vetting or approval by the principals of the committee, updating the status in the system and preparing the offer letters). Thus, maybe the date change is a hint however we do not know what it stands for lol.

Good luck to everyone! Btw, my family and I have concerns abt the high average crime rate in Chicago, do you guys think that would be a problem?

I visited Chicago last year, I did not feel it was unsafe at all even late night! You might want to steer clear of south side generally, but otherwise it's not too unsafe based on my stay there for about 2 weeks!

Also - my status changed to 23rd Jan recently

Yes, It's the first time change since they acknowledge my application submission. I did not receive another change in mid Jan. Think maybe the status updates are made in batches so that we have different dates. Likely as well maybe the early changes indicate the admission while the later ones rejection (finger cross and hope not so....)

Hi, could you shed some light on the housing options for LLM students with kids? Just wanted to know whether there are enough residential properties owned by UChicago in a safe neighborhood since there have been reports of frequent gun violence nearby the school area for the past few years.

Hi! So, I am not really aware of University housing for LLM students tbh. As far as I know everyone rented on the private market (there are pretty affordable options out there, definitely if you are willing to share an apartment and if you compare it with other US cities). Most LLM students live in Regents Park (let’s say 40 people). +- 15 people live in the wider Hyde Park area and 15-20 people live downtown Chicago. People with children actually almost all live downtown Chicago (Loop area), since there is easy access to day care, non-studying partners can go out during the day,… it takes about 20-30 minutes to get to the campus from downtown (there is a train, bus and during the winter a University shuttle).

Regarding safety: UChicago has its own police force present on campus. Campus area is definitely safe. Just don’t go south of the university. But then again, you are not going to the Bronx while you are in NY either. I’ve not heard about any shootings witnessed by LLM students. There have been reports of smaller crimes around Regents (for example children snatching phones out of peoples hands). Police is dealing with that, and again this (sadly) happens everywhere in big US cities and is definitely not particular to Chicago. I’ve walked maybe 30x times after midnight in downtown Chicago and I have never felt unsafe for 1 minute.

Submitted my application in October. And I don't think the change of application status date  is a sign of anything, since mine changed to November. It just means your application has been moved on to another review stage (or it could be a decision but we don't know what it stands for). I guess we'll have to wait to find out the outcome.

Hi. I just want to ask if the thing of requirements list going blank really means admission at all, as mine does not go blank... Though I know CLS is too good for me I just want to take a chance.

Hi! Haha, this requirement list went blank thing is going on for years. Kept me busy too. As far as I know there is no connection between a blank list and an admission. At least last year (and I think the year before) the admission decisions were sent via e-mail, not via the platform. That being said, my list went blank and I was admitted. I don't know about the others in the program. Remember however that not every applying / accepted / rejected / waitlisted person is active(ly replying) on this website so you might get a false sense of representation.

Also, don't bother checking the portal 20x times a day. As far as I know the decisions always come out on the announced date (February 15?). Sit back and relax.

I visited Chicago last year, I did not feel it was unsafe at all even late night! You might want to steer clear of south side generally, but otherwise it's not too unsafe based on my stay there for about 2 weeks!

Also - my status changed to 23rd Jan recently

My status also changed to Jan 23. I think it might mean something (but not sure the exact indication of date change), because four friends of mine from the same country did not have such date change since they submitted the application last year.

Hi guys, only a week left till we hear from UChicago. Any new changes in anyone's tracker so far?

My status date is still 01/03/2023 and no changes so far... I wonder if it's a negative sign. Either way, I noticed today that the "recommendation dates" under "letters of recommendation" have disappeared from the status checker. Has anyone else noticed the same change?

Hi folks,
I had an informal conversation with a former UofC staff member yesterday and was told that those with a date change meaning they pass UR1 to UR2 and will likely be admitted and those without will likely be either rejected or waitlisted.

Best of luck to all of us!
