Yes... but I cannot find LLM graduates. Where the hell are they?

So far I have only encountered one LLM graduate, and that was working in a small- to mid-size firm in New York. I think he had an LLM from a UK school even.

You won't find too many, unless you're talking about Tax law. For the most part, LLMs are not that valued in American Law firms, Tax Law notwithstanding, though I'm sure this will be disputed on this board. When discussing my decision to apply for the LLM, I had a few lawyer try to talk me out of it. They believed an MBA was a better degree for law practice than an LLM, especially considering the cost of UCLA. I bet if you browse vault, you'd find more MBAs at major firms than LLMs.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you apply for and what was your profile like? I assume UCLA wasn't your first choice... It is mine and I'm quite nervous now as I am also a UK applicant!
If you dont mind me asking as your a fellow UK student, what University are you currently studying your LLB and what sort of a levels/gcse you got. I just want to get a picture of what UCLA and schools like it want as i wont bother applying next year if the criteria is beyond my capabilities! thanks

Hey, I actually grew up in America and thus did all my pre-university education there... although I don't think I said that anywhere on my application. I wonder if my failure to put A-levels on my application was detrimental...
I got my LLB from UCL in 2009 and passed the NY Bar in July 2009. Currently doing the LPC at BPP Law School and working part-time for a small niche firm in Holborn. I'm probably not a good person to reference, though, given that I was only waitlisted and probably (definitely) won't end up getting in!

You will need a solid 2.1 honours, anything less than that and you chances are dim (UCLA and Berkeley are the gems of the UC system and hence very selective law schools).
For those who think that an LLM from any law school in the USA equates to a chance at a job......happy dreams!

Yes, most LLM programmes specify in their FAQs that these degrees are specifically geared toward professionals who intend to return to their home countries. I personally hope it will help me to gain a training contract in England, as obviously I will be underqualified in the US despite my LLM and NY Bar admission.

wow by the sounds of it, your way more experienced than me. To be honest i dont even know why i bothered applying, if there waitlisting a ucl law graduate (i'm at westminster..i know right!) than what do they want. oxbridge degree? but this is weird becasue someone else posted that you need a solid 2.1 which isnt impossible to do. im so confused as to how they make the decisions for this.....

Got an offer from UCLA. Super excited! When did you guys learn about financial assistance decisions?

Got my scholarship with my admission notice.

I haven't received an official offer letter yet. Had mailed Vic T and he responded with a Congratulations. Guess I will have to wait for the offer letter.

Well done!
What kind of msg did u send to Vic to get this answer? Did u ask for an expedite decision or just when would you get the decision?

Had asked him for an expedited response since last date for accepting offer/s at LSE and SOAS was approaching. Had sent him another mail earlier in fact and he said he would try to help. The last mail was a little pushy. But he let me know.

So am I to understand that everyone who has been accepted thusfar does not live in America?
Posted Mar 12, 2010 15:59
I was admitted on Monday, and I am from the US.

Alright, I've got a few questions for the masses:
(1) who's choosing UCLA?
(2) Over what other universities?
(3) Why?
(4) What subjects do you plan on studying there?
(5) career plans afterwards and how you think UCLA will help you achieve them?
Let me know what you think...it's not just idle chat...I'm trying to decide whether to go myself
Thanks!

I am not choosing UCLA for I have also been admitted in NYU, Penn and Chicago. So far, NYU is my choice. Why? Because it looks better, because they have a specific program that interests me particularly (business regulation and arbitration) and plus, because its NYC !
