I wonder....presumably you'll just be thrown in with the JD students, right? If so, surely it doesn't really make a difference how big or small your LLM class is? Does it?

from what i have heard from the other llm students studying there at this time they dun have all their classes with the JDs. They only have two classes with them,... which i think is not bad at all..
Posted Feb 04, 2010 23:44
now it is really pissin me off.. why.. oh why have i not heard from them yet.. i want this torture done with..
Posted Feb 04, 2010 23:46
Oh wow...that seems almost unbelievable?! I mean, with only 15 students, and the option of (I don't know how many classes to choose from, but, for argument's sake, say, 100), surely that makes it pretty likely you'll end up in classes on your own??? Am I completely off here?

i have been speaking to this guy who is studying there right now.. n he did tell me thats the case.. bc has a couple of programs that are quite popular.. a lot of ppl come lukin for corporate law to bc.. so they do infact have a separate classroom for that.. i dunno how much of that is true.. but considering that i haven't really made y choice yet i haven't done too much research into this.. when i know i will tell u.. ok..? :)

Deal ;-)
I've taken it upon me to keep your mind off the chicago stress...so here's question to occupy you. Rank the following universities (for someone seeking a general LLM, but leaning toward criminal law): UCLA, Chicago, Harvard, Penn, NYU, Yale, Cambridge (UK) and LSE (UK). And, if you can be bothered, give me the basic reasons for your decision.

That is, only midly leaning toward criminal law - not looking to specialise in it. This someone wants to take classes from other other fields as well

@troutface- u r a real sweetheart.. i hope we end up at the same school. General llm leanin towards a criminal side i wud go with Harvard- i quite like their general llm program actually, Yale( I have a friend of mine doing this course), Penn (i have heard good things about the course), Cambridge(excellent college- not so sure about the general llm), Chicago (like their course), NYU (not so sure), LSE (not sure).. what do u think? how did i do?
Posted Feb 05, 2010 00:04
wow, poor little UCLA! Didn't even make it into your rankings! It's fascinating to hear the view from India. I genuinely have no idea how I'd rank them, other than Harvard and Yale at the top.
Out of interest, what have you heard about Penn? And you would really rank it 3rd after Harvard and Yale? Oh, and (to keep the distraction going ;-)) what are you planning to specialise in?

oops.. sorry.. i totally forgot to put that in.. i am working under pressure right now remember.. can't think straight.. i plan to specialize in corporate law with a little bit of intellectual property. I got to know that Penn had an excellent general llm.. this from a lady who was counselling me for my US apps. Nope.. i would rank it fourth after harvard, yale, cambridge..

Right, thanks Atticus. I'm off to bed now. Sorry - I wish I could play the distraction game all night, but I've got school tomorrow - literally. I hope you hear back tonight and I hope it works out for you. Fingers crossed.

still better than an outright rejection, esp considering how small the class size of chicago is.

getting wait-listed is actually pretty good for Chicago. Congrats!
Posted Feb 05, 2010 00:54
@atticus : did you say you got standby???
Posted Feb 05, 2010 03:25
No one was "accelerated" from the waiting list last year, so I guess it would be the same case for this year. Anyway don't lose your hope, and keep expressing your continued interest.

pragh, do you mean all admitted applicants chose to go to U of C?

well, to clariy a bit, the admissions of last year may have "hit" the adcom off guards: much more admitted applicants accepted than they expected, so the adcom had to enlarge the pool without taking any waitlisted applicants.
My wild guess is that if the adcom does not want to keep the larger pool, then they may send out less admissions than last year because the competition is fierce as ever...
Good luck to all!
