I`ve edited the post and added some more points. Too many "I"s anyway :)

Why not Harvard of Columbia? Because. But I remember sending application materials to those schools.:))) I was too lazy to write a good sample of legal writing, check my spelling and grammar and sell myself better :)))). I also did not have much of experience in law in private firms at that time ( I was only 22 ). I`m not some sort of nerd or gunner with lots of publications and a great number of funny scrolls :)) from various competitions. I could not even indicate a prospective PhD (kandidatskaya) in my application... as I had not been enrolled yet at the relevant time. I was rejected by Harvard in march. Columbia did not admit my on the fly so I had to wait. In the end - I did not make. It was a big surprise to me that the admission process at Columbia was horrible. People were rude. Columbia maybe supercool and all that but they definitely have to do something about the whole procedure. Maybe they treat so only people, who are not suppose to make it there- I do not know.

As for the NYU... did not even apply there (relatively easy to get because of the admission numbers and for some other reasons... . Lots of LLMs at my program have chosen Penn over NYU (and they were accepted to both programs). 1) Not everyone likes New York (noisy, expensive) 2) Not everyone likes big programs (around 250-400 LLMs - too much for me) 3) In T10 the quality of education is the same. I do not think that my professors in Corporations or International Finance are worse than those in Harv or NYU. 4) The job prospects in T10 are the same. Why bother?

I did not send my documents to Chicago.

But I do not think that there are people who might choose Penn, Chicago, NYU and Columbia over Harvard, Stanford or Yale. In MY opinion, the mere fact of being in those schools (and not because of the alleged quality of their education) opens slightly more doors... as the alumni network is wider and might be stronger... and the brand is better known. Good and... not so good professors are everywhere... even at Harvard)

Everything boils down to the following. Some schools have rejected me, some schools have accepted me. From all the schools that had actually accepted me, I decided to go to Penn... and I DO NOT REGRET it. There is life outside Harvard, Yale or Stanford... and it is not bad at all!

Thanks for the reply, man! I agree with you, actually. Just an unusual case because of your GPA. This why I was asking. BTW -- I don't think that an LL.M at a lower ranked school opens less doors. Finally, it all depends on you, your abilities. Besides, eg, some law firms prefer to hire top 5% students - no matter what the law school is. I guess being in 5% in Harvard is really something challenging. Good luck!

LL.M at a lower ranked school does open a TAD fewer doors:). But after all - you only need one or two ;). But it must be THE door. In T3 the chances are still higher than in T10 or T14. Pure statistics ;)

GPA doesn`t matter that much. Believe me. Another factor to be considered - the competitors. If you compete this year with many people from Mother Russia who have 4.7-5.0 even your - 5:0 GPA won`t be of much help. But PhD or pending PhD, number of publications, scrolls :)) from stupid competitions; work experience and etc - all this mix is of importance.

I knew no partners and other dudes from the law firms who could write me a letter of recommendation. FUI if a letter is written by a an alumnus of the law school you wanna get into and it is indicated - you might have a higher chance. Like - a LOR to Harvard - this dude is the guy blah-blah, I recommend that you accept him - he is a good asset. Signed Vasya Pupkin Harv LLM 2001 . Damn good LOR for Harv.
There must be a couple of dudes exactly from Columbia or NY at almost any law firm :)

There are some more points. :)

I actually haven't mentioned my pending PhD (aspirantura) at MGIMO. I thought it might be regarded as a drawback, ie, why don't you first finalize your PhD and apply for LL.M than. Probably, it was not a good idea? What do you think, man?

Relax. :). I think that your "draw back" idea is wrong... but it does not matter that much now.

Hello! I'm new here and I'm enjoying the discussions. It is good to help controlling the anxiety of this waiting period!

So, here are my answers:

1. Brazil/29 yrs old.
2. 8.5/10
3. 6 years of professional experience (law firm).
4. 1 Law Review publication
5. 117/120 IBT

I have the impression that universities choose younger applicants and I am relatively old :(
