South American applicants for LLM 2016-2017

Hi! I am from Brazil and I have finished all my applications for 2016/2017. That said, we're heading now to the worst part of this whole process: waiting, waiting and more waiting...

So far I have received some offers, but I wiil wait for all schools and scholarships decisions in order to to make an informed decision about my future.

What about you guys?

Hablo español también, pero pienso que es mejor mantenermos nuestra conversa en inglés.

Cheers!

Hi brunofloripa!

I haven't applied yet, because I'm writing my personal statement. I have the first version, but I need to improve it (it's really hard!!! Since I'm not used to write about myself.
Hopefully, I will be applying by the first week of December.

BTW, congrats on your offers! Which universities did you apply?

Best!

Ps. As I asked before, I've been evaluated above average. Does it helps to some extent?

I have no doubt that the personal statement is one of the most important parts of our applications. Try your best in writing it.

I've applied to several universities within the top 25 Law School Rankings. I will then choose one based on location and scholarships, mainly because we are facing hard economic struggles here in Brazil (our currency is really undervalued against the US dollar). Of course I have 2 or 3 "dream schools", but I will have to wait for the decisions about financial aid in order to choose one.

P.s.: I think the "above average" evaluation is a good starting point for your application, but you should focus on your personal statement and letters of recommendation. That's where you can differentiate yourself from other applicants.

Guys,

How long did it take for you to receive your AACRAO evaluation?

Hi ypm!

My AACRAO evaluation took 11 days since my transcripts were received (including weekends). LSAC sent me an e-mail when my evaluation was ready.
I guess in my case it was pretty fast.

It depends! I can't precisely remember how long it took to LSAC evaluate mine but as far as I can recall it took them a full month.... But I've sent my transcripts before september. I've heard it goes faster by the time applications are open.

When did you send it?

They received mine 2 weeks ago. So, I was a bit worried since it took much faster to process the transcript and the LOR.

Ypm, you have to be patient because this is the busiest period of LSAC. Many deadlines are due by the first or second week of December and I believe they are concentrated on making and sending the reports.

LORs and transcripts are processed right after LSAC receives it. Evaluation takes a bit longer. They will provide your report soon enough! No worries!

Are you going just for NYU?

Hi guys,

Employability is a factor we cannot ever predict...
Some people get lucky and some just don't. Sure you have to have high gpas to dream with a BigLaw.
So we just have to keep up to the good and hard work and hope for the best.

What's your concentration? Or are you going for the general llm?

I'm seeking an LLM in Environmental Law. However, I have this feeling the number of applications is gonna decrease in face of the currency depreciation (at least here in Brazil) but I do hope to see a good group of South Americans in the US next year.

Hi MFCir, what universities are you planning to apply to? Or did you already applied?. I'm Chilean btw and I think we're minority.
Hope all is well with your process, even though the circumstances aren't the best possible.

Hi there. I've decided to apply to Pace, Georgetown and George Washington (and maybe Maryland and Duke). I'd really like to go to DC or NYC. The process is going well, just a little delay in my recommendation letters, which is pretty much the one reason why I haven't applied yet.

Hi MFCir! How have you been with your application process?.
Since I decided to apply to GW, I was wondering if you wrote an scholarship essay. I'm struggling with that essay! because I don't know what to put on it. Can you help me out or anybody???
I'd really appreciate it!
