Does anyone know what are SLS' whereabouts?
Posted Mar 03, 2009 22:22
maybe all their professors have been pirated by harvard, so they are panicking and are unable to attend to our silly applications.

OK, many of you won't believe (specially that obtuse user Destiny09 and his alter egos), but I've JUST received a call from a woman from SLS Admissions - of course I can't remember her name, since I almost had a heart attack when I saw a strange number on my cell phone!!!
She was very kind, asked if I had questions reg. SLS or the program (SPILS), and than made those long awaited questions... What I want to do in the U.S., if I was aware of the features of the program (research-oriented, empirical legal studies) etc. I asked her about scholarship opportunities, and she gave me some advice on that matter, pointing out that I should try Fundação Estudar scholarship (for Brazilian students). She also asked if I was admitted elsewhere, and I mentioned my admission at UMich on Jan. 6th and last monday's NYU adm., with half-tuition scholarship.
The important part: she said that admission decisions will be made/released within TWO or THREE WEEKS, being communicated by email.
I've heard that, if Stanford called you, you have a 50% chance of being admitted! I think I'll need sleeping pills or some doses of Jack Daniel's (or both) during this month!

I haven't been called yet, but congrats Franziscaner!
Along with Yale, Standford is the best law school in US.

maybe destiny09 scared away all the potential sources of info. destiny09 and his discussions on fraud has really poisoned this board.

Well, if you consider that the options are "yes" or "no" then even the ones who did not received the call have a 50% chance :-P

Mmmmmh... No, not really. For instance, the chance of an elephant falling from my roof today is closer to 0 than to 50%, although it could just either fall or not fall from my roof (2 choices as well). (Not meaning that I would think your chances of being admitted to SLS are the same as in my example; it's just an example... - but still I don't think an applicant's chance of being admitted to SLS is 50%)

You're right, the 'general probability' of being accepted at SLS is roughly: the number of admitted students divided by number of applicants - assuming similar credentials among them, which is a rather artificial assumption. It replicates the acceptance rate (perhaps 10%? 8%?).
The 'yes' or 'no' are just outcomes of this distribuition, and - here is the point - the chances of getting YES or NO are NOT evenly distributed!
For the same reason, you can't say that your chances of winning the lottery are 50%, because either you win or you don't ;-)
An alumna told me that the call means that one has been shorlisted, when chances increase to 50% (in other words, 1 to 1 competition for a spot, not 1 to 10). Hope she's right.
Anyway, since some people do get admitted without a call, the lack of phone contact simply doesn't mean anything!
Keep ya fingers Xd.

The correction might have been useful, though, for those post readers who are not well versed in Math and Statistics... hehehe
