NYU@NUS 2012/2013

Hi everyone!

I applied to the NYU@NUS LL.M. program and thought it would be good idea to open this thread for all who did the same in order to keep each other up to date.

So, has anyone heard from admissions already? ;-)

Cheers!

@ Frontal - Hi, I've applied for NYU@NUS too but quite frankly I'm looking at it more as a backup than my first option. I'm keener on US law schools. Was just wondering have you heard good things about the program? Are you thinking of it as a first option?

Hey guys! Last year first offers for NYU@NUS went out around the 18/19 January. Wish you all good luck. Anyone heard anything yet for this year's intake?

Hi everyone,

I am a lawyer from India and have got an offer from NYU@NUS for 2012-13. I have also been given the Dean's award worth 20,000 USD. They want the confirmation with the 500 USD fee by 6th Feb, 2012 which I think is too soon.

Nonetheless, I've heard its a good course and should be worth the money spent.

anyone else who's got the offer?

@Sonam - Congrats! That's great! Are you planning to take the offer or are you waiting for other results too? If you don't mind, could you tell us when you applied?

Congratulations, sonamtaneja! I know of one other offer that was made. So, together with Asiafan, that makes 3 of you... :-)

Thank you guys!

I applied last minute- 15th december, 2012 (which was the deadline).

I am still researching on how good the course is. In a high probability, I will take it up as I've been hearing only good things about it.

What do you think: LSE or NYU@NUS with a scholarship?

Hi,

I've been thinking about the same option. I feel the latter would be better for the unique confluence of American and Asian commercial laws that it offers.
Assuming you've got the Dean's award, the money required to be spent on NYU@NUS would be alomost the same as that on LSE (w/o scholarship).

Plus, the variety of subjects offered in the NUS part of the LLM is amazing.

If it helps. I´ve got a friend who had to make the same decision, NYU@NUS or LSE. He chose NYU@NUS and said that it was the right decision. The professors are amazing, they NYU professors are really looking forward to their time in Singapore. The professors even invited them to their houses and they had great get togethers and parties. It´s a great bunch of people. Only around 40 students, that is what it really makes it different from the NYU mass programme. You know everyone in class what creates a unique sence of community. You can travel around asia (for me as a european a strong argument) on weekends, instead of "enjoying" the typically British rain weather.

I personally declined Oxford MJur and Cambridge LL.M offers for the NYU@NUS programme (call me crazy :-) and I am sure it´s the right decision for myself. I would say it depends where you wanna practice later. If you hope to land a job in London (which is not easy nowadays) and you haven´t studied in UK as an undergraduate, you should go for the LSE programme. If you studied in Asia before and you wanna practice in Asia, it´s a tough one. I cannot tell if the employees would prefer that you have some studying experience in Europe or that you deepen your understanding in global and asian business law. For me as a European who wanna work tightly connected with Southeast Asia or even in Asia in the future, I am sure the studying (and working) experience in Asia is key.

We should definitely create a Facebook group :-) And welcome to the NYU@NUS programme Yo007. You won´t regret your decision...

Already some opinions about housing? We could try to rent a Condo together (for 2-4 people). I have friends in Singapore that could support us. But honestly, I prefer to look for housing possibilities directly in Singapore. It´s important to see the place, the area, etc. before making decision. Of course that requires that you live in a hotel or at a friends place for 1-2 weeks. But I did that last time and it was no problem.

FB group "NYU@NUS 2012-13" is up :)

As for apartments, if anyone would be interested to take over apartments from the existing NYU@NUS students, let me know and I will help you to ask around! Most of them stayed in College Green on their arrival and then looked for places together..
