LLM-MEX

Hello to all!! I received letter of admission to both Michigan and UPenn LLM 07 classes. I would appreciate any assistance that would help me decide which of these 2 excellent law schools should I attend.

Thanks in advance, and best regards.

I would go to Penn: 1)Ivy League and better ranked, 2)Wharton, 3)best located.

What if he did not apply for the Wharton program ?

Secondly, according to US NEWS rankings, Michigan is ranked n°8 whereas Penn is n°7 - not much of a difference IMO.

I totally agree. If I were you, i would prefer UPenn. And i would add to the previous message:
1) the opportunity to take courses at Wharton which is very important for business lawyers and can be a great career asset;
2) without a doubt a better location (one hour and a half from NYC);
3) great number of well-known professors.

But don't forget that tese two schools are excellent: so enjoy and congrats'!

Even if you didn't apply to the dual Wharton program, you still have the opportunity to take up to two courses at Wharton.

Completely agree with eowyn. You have developed my answer perfectly: i) even if you don't pursue the Wharton program you can take two courses there and benefiting from some of the great resources of such a famous business school (library, conferences and events...), ii) both are very close in the usnews rank but Penn is still better ranked and it is an ivy league school, which is important in terms of reputation and job opportunities (f.i.: there is a special day for ivy league schools within NY job fair), iii) location is better: close near NY and near Washington...

It is just my opinion. Maybe my last post was too short, but I would take Penn with no doubt. Michigan is not a bad school (of course), but for me is a step below.

Really? I didn't know that. Interesting, that's definitely good to know.

Did any of you apply for the dual Wharton program ?

Also, could you say more about how taking one or 2 courses from Wharton make a difference ? Does it appear on your degree ? (I'm not criticizing what you said, I just want to know more about this as I was not aware of this)

Hi!

I applied to the dual program and got my notification of admission to U penn so far. Nothing was said about the Wharton program - don't know what i schould think of it...

Anymay, i confirm you can take two courses at Wharton just when you are a student in the LLM program (see U Penn web site). In that case you don't obtain a special diploma. The courses only appear on your transcripts - but it's always a point you can mention in your CV, cover letter or during an interview.

Regards.

Hi All;

I am pretty new to this board and try my best to take a peek at whats happening on a daily basis... This Penn thread caught my eye as I am interested in persuing a masters of law degree in 2007, and Upenn is one of my target universities....

I have a small doubt. Do you have to submit an essay along with your apps. for enrolling in the "Certificate in Business and Public Policy", the program Penn Law & Wharton have jointly created.

The web-site says: "... Participation in the program is limited to no more then five students, and interested students will be asked to submit a separate essay stating the reasons for pursuing the Certificate."

Do u have to send this 'seperate essay' as a part of your application process? eowyn75005 or someone, who has already applied, could you please clarify this point. I would be grateful. Many congratulations to all those who have been successfully admitted to Upenn & the very best of luck to everyone else.

Yes you have to submit a separate essay. This essay is a one page essay explaining the reasons you want to attend this dual program. You have to post it along with your U Penn LLM application.

Good luck!

Thank you all for your very helping and valuable responses. Unfortunately, I didn't apply to the Wharton-Penn Law joint program, but I am really interested to take a couple of classes at Wharton. Do you know if there is the slightiest possibility of apply to the said joint program, now that I'm accepted by Penn-Law??

Do you think that the size of the class (aprox. 40 at Michigan vs. 80 at Penn) represents an advantage to take into account?? or is it really not that significant??

Many thanks and best wishes.

Hmmm...this is an interesting post...Michigan Vs. Penn...In my opinion, Penn has a better securities law course. On the other hand, Michigan has a better corporate law course. Michigan's program is much smaller (which for me is a plus) but Penn is much closer to NYC (but Phily sucks). US ranking (which for me is very important) puts Penn ahead but just for one position.

Hard to say...just to correct one information someone posted here: both Penn and Michigan LLMs go to the NYU job fair. The Columbia job fair (which is much better) is only for LLMs from Columbia, Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Virginia and Chicago.

I don't know. I think you should let you intuition guide you. I would go to Penn (Michigan is too cold for me).
